The worst hour of computing

I've just officially had the worst hour of computing of my life. EVERYTHING ON MY NETWORK is perennially fucked up. So I need a little help.

I decided that I wanted networking to work. . The problem was that my Winblows PCs (when I was in Windows, anyway) couldn't see my Mac and vice-versa. A friend of mine said that Winblows networking only works when all of the services are on "automatic". So I do this.

Now that computer can't boot to Windows XP. The cursor changes to an hourglass when you hover over it. Oh, there's SO much more.

Apache CAN NO LONGER START PROPERLY on my server.

Linux on the server is fucked up in general.

Whenever something network-related is opened on my mac (browsers, control panels) the program being used locks up.

.NET Server (on my test server I brought home to experiment with) is the only thing that seems to work correctly.

If you can get here: http://www.akgames.net:8000/ then that works.

If anyone could clue me into WHAT THE FUCK Winsuckalltheassintheworld XP has done to my network, that would be great.

I'd post this on windowsbbs.com, but they know nothing, and I can't cuss there. It's just not gonna work...

The only thing i can think of (unless somehow microsoft has programmed windows xp to memorize passwords and get into and destory other operating systems) is that there is likely an ip conflict. that could stop apache, and viewing the files. What protocol are you using (smb, appletalk, nfs)?

m0r is right, it's an IP conflict or Lep.. however you spell it...It could be a stray muffin though

Oh, and before you do it again, do not set everything to automatic. It'll do this sort of thing. xp comes with most things on automatic, home networking requirements are more than in there. go to tcp/ip properties and make sure all of them have the same subnet mask and that the first 3 nodes of the ip are the same for all machines. and then make sure the workgroup/domain are the same for all of them. and that the computer name/netbios name is different for each of them. Do not, under any circumstances, use the automatic configuration utility that comes with windows xp.

Well unstalling is unavoidable after a few weeks of owning XP. Think of it as you are getting it out of the way sooner (until you have to do it again).

to do a full reinstall anytime, anyplace...

hmph, as if you need training to reinstall windows. you just need a spare evening... every few weeks...

also, i think it's gremlins. if you ever had leprachauns, the gremlins will have chased them out by now, leprachauns never tend to hang around very long when there's gremlins about...

Yes, this was the problem. After I set everything back to defaults and reinstalled Apache, and reconfigured my network (fuck I'm working my ass off here!) everything looks fine.
