whenever i try to watch a movie in linux in mpeg format it just displays a green screen where the movie should be playing. I want to use mplayer but this happens in every movie player without any error messages. Got any ideas as to what may cause this?

errr, are you sure that you have all the codecs installed, includeding the win32 ones

yes. I installed them according to the mplayer website and void mains instructions in another thread.
