noob in linux getting friends interested too

i've been using linux for less then 2 weeks now (redhat 8.0), and so far 2 of my friends have told me how much they hate microsoft, one of them said they want to switch, here's what he said:

"i dont like microsoft annymore it really sucks i want a new system but i dont know wich one"

anyway...like i said, i'm new and don't know much. i feel a lof of reading coming on in the next few days b/c i want him to switch (add to the growing number of linux users), but i'm going to have to make linux look really good to him.
i'm going to need to get winex to work, because he made a frightening remark:

"but i dont know if i want linux cause u cant play games on it"

ahhh....i was planning on learning all this linux stuff slowly, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen....wish me luck

I would wish you luck but you won't need any. "Luck" only applies to Microsoft Operating systems.

Tell them to use a CD Based Linux like knoppix3.1. It rund directly from the CD. You set your CD rom as your boot device and vuala you are there.

  He can play around with it and get his feet wet. It comes with all the apps you basically need.

 Lets see MS pull a trick like that. If that isnt perfection i dont know what it is. My instructors at school were jumping like little kids when i told them about it and gave them few copies.

i remember a few months ago when my brother first introduced me to linux (his box was out in OK when he was back from college for the summer), i used a program "Putty" (that used the ssh port #22) to connect and login to his computer...how do i set this up on my computer so i can show my friend at least what the terminal part of linux is like?

How do you set what up? Putty? If you just want to know how to install Putty you go to http://www.openssh.org/windows.html and download putty.exe and copy it into a directory on your PC (in your PATH, like C:\WINDOWS).

i've been talkin to fiends at school, and a lot of them hat microsoft and windows. Some of them wish they had macs but luckily there is a few of us that use Linux there (not just me) and some of the people are wanting to switch to Linux.

I shall direct them here probly to get some help.

no, i know how to install putty, but what do i have to do to my linux system to let him connect to my computer? a server or something? i really don't know..maybe i don't have to do anything, all i want to know (right now) is how can my friend have a 'shell' accound on my computer right now (i guess that's what you'd call it)

It's probably already set up. All you need to do is have "sshd" turned on. Drop to a command prompt and type "ssh localhost" and if you get a login prompt you are all set. As long as you are not behind a firewall you friend should be able to connect to your machine via putty (or any other SSH client).

you must have the ssh server running.
do a ps -e and see if there is "sshd" running.

then ya gotta add a user for your fiend:
useradd friend -m
passwd friend
enter frineds pass:

then he can connect to your computer using putty... put i dont think he will be able to see the GUI (graphic user interface) with putty, only the commandline
