I need help with linux.

I figured i would start a new thread with a title more appropriate to the subject at hand.

I'm using mandrake 9.1 Linux

Ok so i have linux up and running on my other computer with Gnome, here are the problems i have run into.

First of all i WANT KDE to work, i really do, but try as i might every single darn time i tried to install it, when i tried to load the GUI up it would give me a buncha stupid errors about missing files.

My Major problem right now is when i try to use the like "Add Package" program that pull other software packages off the linux cd for you it will ask me to put in a linux cd like "Linux Instal cd #2) so i put the cd in and hit ok. and all it does is spit the cd out and ask me to insert the linux cd #2. but see i AM inserting it. Thats my real problem right now, i cant add any of the packages without totally reinstalling the whole thing which takes forever. So if i could get some  help it would be nice.

The CD could quite possibly screwed, I dont run mandrake personally, but I know red-hat has a mediacheck feature on there CD's which checks and MD5 checksum.

Mandrake may have a similar feature, or if you got someone to checksum there cd you could do it manually and see if they match.

You do an MD5 sum by doing this...

$ md5sum /mnt/cdrom

You can do it to other files to, get someone else with mandrake to do this and tell you the checksum.

If your numbers match then the problem is somthing else, if they dont, then you will need a new disc im afraid.

You could try cleaning it as well, CD's tend to get dirty, but some dishwashing detergent and a soft cloth can clean them. I do it often to CD's that have sat on my desk and gathered much.

Good Luck.

wouldn't it be /dev/cdrom? the /mnt/cdrom is just where it's mounted... which says nothing about the bootsectors or anything so it cannot actually verify the cdrom...

Well thats odd then, very odd, do they complain about dependencies.

You might want to ask someone who uses mandrake on these forums.
