Does anybody else have the odd feeling you should to be suing somebody for using your unix code, but aren't?

IBM argues that because SCO distributed a version of Linux under the open-source General Public License (GPL), it can't claim that Linux software is proprietary.

I'd like to see how they try to weasel out of that one.

I'd just like to see them dissapear...

Actually, SCO may really be hurt by this.  They don't own the UNIX patents so they have little to retaliate with this... and I read on slashdot that Novell forbade them to revoke IBM's licence, they may have little left to stand on when this is all done.

This is still not going to help Linux in the short term.  These cases won't be heard until 2005, if I remember correctly.  From what I've read, the massive SCO smear campaign is already hurting Linux deployment in businesses.  Are these businesses going to turn to SCO as a Linux alternative?  No.  They are going to go to NT and maybe BSD.

And SCO has already started making vague threats regarding BSD.

In the book UNIX for Dummies there is a section on what Unix is and how it came about and different Unix variations. In this section it says that Microsoft sold their version of Unix(Xenix) to Santa Cruz Operation (SCO). It also says soething to the effect that Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) was started from venture capital from Microsoft.
This is a direct quote about Xenix that I found on the web.
====================================================
In the late 1970's Microsoft licensed UNIX source code from AT&T which at the time was not licensing the name UNIX. Therefore Microsoft created the name Xenix. Microsoft did not sell Xenix to end-users but instead licensed the software to software OEMs such as Intel, Tandy, Altos and SCO  who then provided a finished version of their own Xenix to the end-users or other customers.

SCO introduced its first version of Xenix named SCO Xenix System V for the Intel 8086 and 8088 in 1983. Today SCO Xenix is one of the more commonly used and found versions of Xenix.
==================================================

Here is another quote taken from the web.
==================================================
In 1979, brothers Doug and Larry Michels founded the Santa Cruz Operation (SCO) as a UNIX porting and consulting company using venture capital from Microsoft, which handed over all further development of Microsoft XENIX to SCO.

So, now, after basically bringing SCO into existence out of nothing, M$ is using SCO as a pawn in their smear campaign.  In the end, M$ will likely gain a fraction more market and only be able to hold it for a few years at max, and SCO will likely disappear.

Now SCO has against them all of the primary colors. Theres Red Hat, IBM or Big Blue, and SuSE whose main color is green. Has anyone else noticed this pattern?

Quoted from article linked in most recent post:

quote:

 IBM urges its customers to use non- warranted, unprotected software.

Interesting.  IBM is a hardware company; they don't "urge" customers to use anything by their hardware.  Oh, and "unprotected"?  So, I'm seriously supposed to pay M$ to NOT solve problems when I could be using software that I can "protect" by myself?

Wrong.

The primary colors of LIGHT are red, green, and blue.  RGB monitors remember?

The primary colors of PAINT are magenta, cyan, and yellow.  Inkers add black to that.  Thats why professional printing is CMYK.

They tell you red blue and yellow are primary colors of paint in grade school because you are a little kid and can't remember words like magenta and cyan.

I'm impressed that M51DPS recognized the color thing.

They shall roast in proprietary hell with little code monkey daemons telling them that they can get the key out, if they sign a binding NDA agreeing not to go to heaven.  The first time the GPL is really tried in court I hope to all that is right that it holds - if it doesn't I give up on fair and start a war of attrition on all that is unholy.  (non free)

Actually theres a bit in the EULA for Windows that says that you cannot sue them or even hold them responsible for it.  So according to the little fuck monkey lawyer / economist scum filth bastard wanker arseholes own arguments Windows is shit because Microsoft wont even protect you against it.

Mr Obrian : you are a pedant sir!   :D
(I take it the r is actually meant to be there?)
