A Nice little message from Microsoft

It's because you have probably selected "automatic updates on" in Windows XP, which automaticly installed Windows Media Player 9. Oh sure, you can uninstall Windows Media Player 9, but you'll never get rid of DRM.

My advise (what I'm about to do):
1. Back-up your non-system and program files on a separate FAT32 partition.

2. Make an ext3 partition.

3. FORMAT C: the partition with Windows.

4. Install Windows 98 SE or Windows XP (without the updates this time!).

5. Install Linux on the ext3 partition.

6. Configure GNU Grub so you can choose between Linux or Windows to at start-up.

When you've done this, you'll only have to woory about Windows when your going to play a game that doesn't work in Linux. But of course, this is what I should do

Actually, there is no uninstall for WMP9. The only way to do it is to make a restore point before installing it, and going back to that point to uninstall it.

I won't use WMP for anything winamp can do, especially because winamp can do it better, faster, and with less RAM.

Does the DRM components in question affect third party players?

The popup is kindof disturbing.  "a DRM security file are sent to Microsoft"... right.  So MS holds the DRM keys here.

And I still find it distasteful how MS refers to DRM as "security."

This message came from Realplayer9 with the WMV plugin installed, by the way. WMP9 is installed however I have not accepted the license agreement so I cannot use it. I also have never clicked 'OK' to download any DRM stuff, which means that some files (which I downloaded legally from people's websites) will not play. I have yet to try these files in a non-Windows environment.

Gorillaz used to have DRM protected WMA's... now they don't have any kind of music files on their website at all

that security thing only opens when you try to open certain types of media file that are meant to be paid for before you can use them. go into Kazaa and look for sexbroadcaster, those files highlighted in orange are the ones that need that weird authentication thing.

Those "orange" files work fine when you use WINE in Linux. Out of boredom, I downloaded one of those "Just $1.99" files one night, and it worked fine.  

...And I never got a DRM pop-up, either.
