Care to help me learn Wine?
« on: 13 August 2002, 03:58 »
Well, Wine is sure confusing. I looove step by step instructions, even I can follow them. So would a kind soul here show me how to use Wine to run an 0ldsk00l game?

For starters, im not sure whether Wine has a windows GUI emulator or not, if it did, that would make it super easy for me.

Anyways, I want to run shattered steel in an emulated windows 95. It was made in 1996 and can run on dos/windows. Older win-compatible games are easier to emulate in Wine then newer games, correct?

Wine is currently installed. I know I should take all the time to learn it, but there's a reason im called Lazygamer. I wanna play some 0ldsk00l... now!  ;)

you are not worthy of advice (did you notice the thread about Calums religion?) but here...
first what needs to be done is configure wine.
go into ~/.wine and edit config. Its pretty straight forward and i believe it will explain what to do... use some of your non-bob sense

then all you gotta cd to /mnt/cdrom (if its on cd) then 'wine install.exe' (or whatever the install file is) it should bring up the installer program just like it would in windows and then you jsut install it.

I'm sure there is much more, but this is a breif summary of what to do.

Well thank you MOR. Im making a little bit of progress with Wine. Perhaps I need to install and configure SSTEEL in XP, then try and run it in Mandrake. It seems a little tempermental though. Like the install screen had some of the text cut off, and the soundsetup woulden't work at all, and I get a stub exec error when I try to run the game.

If installing in wind0ze don't work, then I'll just have to run ZSNES 1.337 for Linux, which im sure will work just fine.

Sure hope you'll have more luck than I did with gaming under Linux.
I tried to set up Quake 3 Arena a while ago and it runs perfect (even more frames than in Windoze) except for the fact that I can't get the sound running at all.
After digging and asking around it's probably due to my soundcard not being worthy of ID Software's games, at least in Linux.
I didn't try to setup any more games (primary reason being that most other games I play don't have a Linux port), if you find out that Wine (or WineX) is good enough I might give that a try 'cause I'm pretty bored of having to reboot in Win all the time when I wanna play.
If I remember correctly from another thread on these forums WineX isn't exactly up to speed yet to emulate all Windoze games :/

WineX and Wine, difference? What I notice about Wine is that it loves to run your install programs ok, but coughs whenever it actually has to run the game.  :(

WineX has directX and support for installshield built in. WINE cant play games that need directX is my understanding.

I have a better solution.  Don't run Windows or Windows apps at all.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

I don't run Wind0ze apps, I run GAMES! Surely one is not a traitor if he chooses to stay half-microsoft just to feed his gaming addiction.

Well XP, I feel that someone who is extremely skilled with Wine or WineX could configure something to run good on it, but im not that person, at least not right now.

My theory is that you'd have less reason to boot into windows if you Wine could be configured to many games good.

But christ, I am very disgusted at Wine. They need a Winedrake or something.  ;)

Like MOR said, WineX provides a DirectX layer needed for some Windows games to run.
Problem is, it's not perfect (yet) and while many games run fine, many others won't run at all or will run but very buggy.

And well, staying away from Evil Bill's claws is reason enough to stay away from Windoze.
I can't see why people should bother installing proggies like XP-anti spy or researching which services are turned on by a particular Service Pack  designed to spy on you and report which mp3's you listen to or if you watch divX movies.
Xpee Loser : we'll talk when M$ enforces their DRM shit and remove any "non-secure" multimedia functionality from your precious XPee computer  :D

Well Kudos to you guys for being morally strong enough to feel a HUGE surge of shame when using a wind0ze product. Others like me(some of the regulars are like me) realize that need for raw compatibility to supplement our master plan(their master plan actually, I still can't use Linux really good yet).

Neither can I  ;)
And I still fire up Windoze too when I fancy a game of Serious Sam or Quake 3 but I hope one day I won't have to anymore, maybe some day there will be Linux ports for all the games I like to play.
Gaming is the only thing that makes me keep Win2K on my box, I found out that Linux is very hard to master but you learn a lot every day, just by using it and installing programs and stuff like that.

I also find that it lacks a little user-friendlyness compared to Windows but I can live with that.

Pity me all you like, I like the game and I play it.
And for the record I know there's a native version of Q3, but you don't even need it if you have the Windows version, I just stated that I would like to have more Windows games ported to Linux, that's all.

the windows version is the linux version, all you need to do is download the Linux engine for it.

Correct, you make a Quake 3 dir in your /usr/local/games dir, you extract the baseq3 dir from the cd in the same dir, download the linux pointrelease, install it and you're set to go
The ID Software guys rock!!!
Now let's just hope they port Doom III to Linux as well.
