you know, i was thinking. yes there was smoke coming from my ears.my microsoft box(2k)has many programs installed. most do what i need, too get 100% of ALLOWED access i require around 1.5 gigs in addition to the o/s. a total format costs me about 3 days and many cd's to have everything set.
    on my linux box (rh9) there are many programs installed. most do what i need. to get 100% of TOTAL access requires 3 cd's and 45 mins. only the os disc's are used.

i have only found the linux box to be lacking in the areas of user friendlyness. example: 1. there are so many programs that it is intimidating. 2. most programs seem to make the assumption that i know what im doing.
all other areas of the total system are overwhelming in thier abilities.

i have found my microsoft box to be lacking in these areas: 1. security  2. anonymity  3.control  4. support  5. choice. i would give examples but the dial-up users might get offended.

the only progam i would like to see that is not in the linux install is a open source  3-d game engine with a 5th grade interface. once familliar it should have a more advanced interface.

the programs i need other than the microsoft install are to numerous to list. very few have full access.

i love freedom.
i love linux.

Ok. I guess that's good.

Yeah, there is a *lot* of stuff. I think distributions should scale down on duplicate stuff and concentrate on providing a base of tools used in many different trades.

Yes, so don't bother with them unless you need those abilities. It's easy not to, just don't bother with something you don't want to learn   .

Actually, I think I, as a broadband user, would *still* get offended. That's a lot of data, too much for probably a T1 even.

A "5th grade interface"? If you want a pretty good open source 3-d game engine, check out Cube (http://wouter.fov120.com/cube/). The mapping features are very limited however. The author totes it as 'doing some things better than most engines and worse than others, about the equivalent of Quake II'. It's very fun online though. And also, that's not Linux's fault. Linux developers shouldn't make the 3D engine, did the Windows developers make all the Windows engines? Quake II and Doom are open source btw.

i wrote that with the intention of a windows user reading it. hopefully helping to convert.
as for the 5th grade interface,most windows users start to understand comp's at that level of understanding. i know i do but after time i learn to use advanced functions and so-on. as for microsofts support, there mian helpfull resource is the re-install. they have never been able to help me. niether on the phone, at the site, or on m$ forums.
however when i have a problem in linux i post here or void's forum and i have an answer in usually very short time. as for the game enigne. i never stated that red hat or lycros should make a engine. i understand that distros bundle software from various makers. i also think its a great statement that the only thing missing from my install is an obscure purpose built piece of software.  as for the wine aspect, the piont was that everything i install after m$ is already in linux.
