CD stuff
« on: 5 October 2002, 00:33 »
Okay, it's time to get this stuff learnt. So to basics.

CD eject seems to be very strange. When I had RH7.3 on the cd draw would eject once, and then after closing it would not open again until I logged off. Mandrake is very slow in ejecting CDs.

I am trying to play some MP3s and some CDs(normal purchased type) using XMMS. Unfortunately it does not see the CDs, and hence I cannot play them.

I have a matsushita DVD/CDROM and a teac CDRW. The recognition of CD and using CDs seems to be related to some interaction with the two drives. Does anyone else have a problem running two drives? I am currently running Mandrake 8.2 (because RH cannot use the network adapter). Oh and, before you ask, this is the fire system. I watched Life of Brian on DVD on it last night using XINE, so it seems to work alright there. XINE does not work on the CD.

Should XMMS run 'out of the box'?

Does Linux handle Drives differently in comparison to others OSs.

I will soon be trying a few things out, but I thought I would float this here first.

Most of todays Linux distros today come set to automatically mount the CD when it is inserted. You can not eject the CD by pressing the button if it is mounted. You must first unmount it (which also means no programs can be accessing the directory structure on the CD).

You can normally umount the CD as a normal user by right clicking on the CD-ROM ICON on your desktop. There should also be the capability to eject it from this ICON. Another way is to use the "umount /mnt/cdrom" command, or just type "eject" which will unmount the CD and eject it. You can even run the "eject" command from a run box in your GUI.

Cheers. I had absolutly no idea of this. That answers a lot of questions straight off. Well no need perform some of the tests I was going to do.

I think I have configuration issues (or rather issues related to my own ignorance at this moment in time).

No CD music yet. I am certain it's something simple related to something I don't yet know. maybe permissions or configuration.

My computer is now finally my own, and no-one else uses it so I can at last devote time to learning. That is as long as I can stand the noise from the fan - since the fire it sounds about the same as a commercial hovercraft, that's why I wanted the music.

Thanks anyway. I think learning Linux is going to be one of my winter projects, that is as long as New England gets it's proper winter (six foot of snow on average - yay I love this area of the world). I fancy the idea of doing this for a living (or sideline)

$ mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

Substitue /sev/hdc to your cdrom, of course. And /mnt/cdrom can be interchanged to where you want to mount it to.

I have music. But I'm not sure how. It would give me errors whenever I used Nuatilus to look at the cds. No viewer installed I think. Now I can play the CDs using XMMS ever since I first got it to play by typing /mnt/cdrom into the play location dialog (and view them).

However trying to load MP3 playlists is proving troublesome, but that may be an issue with the CD's. In this case burnt by me under Windows, and no they are not by anyone still alive so I don't feel guilty at having them. And there is nothing in the directory when I view audio CD under nautilus - but this is not a problem.

Thanks all. It's more a case of I'm still wondering around learning the basics.

If I can get my CD writing configured and a scanner configured (I may buy a new scanner anyway as I am currently running it off of a bench power supply) then I will be able to loose windows and start doing the stuff I want to do on my computer.

Wild Jester : Are you trying to play ordinary purchased CDs (burnt audio CDs can be picky)? Have you tried playing audio files (mp3, etc. and does it work)? Are you 100% positive you CDRW is in working condition. Have you tried numerous CDs and of various types (homemade, purchased, etc.)

my cdrw is working correctly. i can mount data cds and read and write to them. i was trying to play a purchased cd not a burned one (but i will try that now). i thought that it might have been cd's with xtras on them but that is not the problem. when i open KsCD it says ejected at the top and i cant mount the cd either from command prompt
