Mandrake..Just a few Q's???

Hi ok after reading through the wealth of info here, I installed mandrake 8.1 with KDE. I know I know slap me but I'm doubble booting, soon as I'm stable with linux wincrap is getting flushed.

 First.. scratch that one, I already found the answer : )

 Second.. well I'm learning my way around already it would seem.

 lastly.. I have no sound, where do I start?

I'm a quick learner shouldn't take to long to learn my way around. First pc I bought I formated within a week.. boy was that fun : )

Hopefully the Mandrakers will answer your questions more specifically but I will try and help as I believe it should apply to Makdrake.  

If you installed KDE, GNOME and other Window Managers/Desktop environments you should be able to select which one you want at the graphical login prompt (KDM or GDM).  If you can't set your "default" desktop environment at the graphical login prompt there is an easy utility called "switchdesk" that will change your default login (this was written by a RedHat guy but Mandrake is based off of RedHat so it probably includes it).  You can open a shell window and type "switchdesk KDE" to switch the default login desktop to KDE. You can replace the "KDE" in that command to GNOME, FVWM, ENLIGHTENMENT, WINDOWMAKER, and TWM (if they are installed).  But you should be able to do it at the graphical login prompt, the switchdesk utility is more targeted to those people who don't use a graphical login and run the "startx" command from a text login.  You may also find a menu option that can set the default login environment but I don't know how Mandrake's menus are laid out.

As far as your pogo game site, if these are Java games the first step would be to install the Java Runtime Environment (java or jre) if it is not already installed.  Then go into the Konqueror setup and enable java and put the path in to where your java run time is installed (e.g. /opt/java/bin/java).  You may also have to trick the web site into thinking you are running IE (also configurable on a site by site basis, look at your konqueror settings under "User Agent").

As far as sound, is your sound card compatible with the Linux kernel you are running?  What model is the sound card you have (or what is the chipset if it's an on motherboard sound card)?  Again, Mandrakers might be able to help you out farther here.  In RedHat you would type "setup" at a shell prompte and select "Configure Sound Card".  Normally if the card is supported it is detected and set up during the installation and you never have to run the setup manually.

With regard to sound first go into Mandrake Control Center then choose Hardware then Hardware again, that displays a list of the hardware on your system.
Click the + next to soundcard. That should display the sound card that linux thinks you have. If that is not correct click on the Run Configuration Tool.
Choose your sound card, you may or may not (you may not need this info if your card is an onboard card) have to configure the proper ports and address's for it.

If you don't know the ports and address's you can get that info by booting windows right clicking my computer and choosing properties. On the second tab you will find your sound card go into it and write down all the info. Then reboot Mandrake and go back into Mandrake Control Center.
Now when you run the config tool you can install the info from Windows. After you have choosen your specific card and put in the proper port/addy info click the Ok button. You should hear "Your sound card has been successfully configured by sounddrake." If you hear that say yes at the prompt.

Also make sure that your mixer settings are not muted. To do that go into the KDE menu Multimedia/Sound/sound mixer. Kmix will come up make sure that the options are not muted. IE Make sure the little green lights are on.

Ok that should fix your problems with basic sound if your card is supported. Now sound for the browser may be different depending on which browser you use.

In most browsers though you will want to use plugger. You may need to copy the plugger.so to your browsers plugins directory. For example I use Mozilla (mostly) and I copied it into
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins from /usr/lib/netscape/plugins. I could have linked to it but I found it simpler to just copy it over.

Also go into /etc as root and edit pluggerrc to use the audio play program  and other programs that you wish. For example it defaults to using playmidi and playmidi wont work on my system for some reason so I set it to use kmidi instead.

Lastly you will need to define this in your browsers preferences section. In mozilla you go into edit/preferences click the + next to navagator and choose helper applications. Add the new type IE audio/midi or whatever it is your adding then type plugger as the application to run it.

That all assumes you have plugger installed if not go into Mandrake control center under system/software and install plugger.

That should take care of it. If it does not do it then your card is probably not supported or incorrectly supported. I know on my 600 the sound card was incorrectly supported. But Mandrake 8.2 beta has just been released so if that is the case then maybe the new beta has fixed it.

I have installed java runtime downloaded from netscape ftp. still no luck with getting it to work. I tried to copy the files from usr/lib/netscape/plugins to usr/lib/mozilla/plugins It wouldn't allow me to copy anything some kind of write error or something. I am using Konqueror wich I believe uses the mozilla platform. I also went into Konqueror configuration settings and made sure all the java is enabled and did evrything I could there. still no luck with the java.. Should I go get netscape?

I have no sound cards recognised in Mandrake Control Center. I can't configure a card thats not there. I have two options. I have onboard, and I have a pci, I'd like to use the pci cause it seems to work better with my system then the agp does. where do go to install the drivers?

I have figured out how to switch inviroments however, I'm still looking where to reset the default inviroment. Not a big issue, just would be helpful once I find the one I want to use mostely. I only have one user setup on my pc so I had to logout and log myself back in in order to change the enviroments.
thx for the prompt replies, it is apreciated. I realise most of this is probebly trivial to all you ol'timerz, thats how I am in windows lol.

Ok. You installed the JRE now if your using Konqueror then go into Settings/Configure Konqueror, then choose the Konqueror Browser. Choose the Java Tab at the top. Check Enable Java Globally. At the bottom of the page where it asks for path to java. Put /usr/java/jre1.3.1_02/bin/java in the path. You may have to change jre1.3.1_02 depending on your version number you have.
Then click Apply. Oh a point on that you must click apply on every page in the Konqueror setup or it will not take effect. So if you make changes to a page apply it before you go on. I have no idea why it is that way.

Also you will not be able to copy files into other areas besides your home unless you are logged in as root. The easiest way to do this is to open a terminal type su, press enter, type in the root password, press enter then type konqueror and press enter. Konqueror will open now press F9 and you will have the Konqueror file manager up and running. Now you can copy files in a graphical environment.

If you have both installed you should turn off the onboard in your bios. Then when you reboot harddrake new hardware finder should find your pci card. At that point once you get back into Mandrake you should be able to see it and configure it. Also if your not using an onboard you will need to get the port and dma address's from windows and write them down before going back into Mandrake.

You can switch desktops at the graphical login. Just pull down the menu where it says "Default" and choose a different desktop. It will then ask you if you want to make that your new default. Hmmmm I don't think you can change environments and have them take effect without logging out. I could be wrong though.

I am not an old timer when it comes to linux I have only been using Mandrake for a couple of months now. Of course I have used Dos/windows environments since 89.
