Problem booting from the Fedora install CD

I am running Windows XP, and I want to upgrade to a dual-boot with Fedora. I have all three ISO's on CD. When I try to boot to the CD, it says that it failed, and F1 to retry and F2 to go to some settings. I am sick of Windows, and I need help!

In Windows, check the CD and see if you can make a boot floppy from it (usually there's a "dosutils" directory).  Boot from the disk.

what did you burn it with? it's possible that the software you used doesn't support creation of bootable CDs. I'd say that's the #1 cause of unbootable CDs

I got Nero with my motherboard. So far, it burned Slackware, BeOS Max (which is difficult for most burning programs, so applause to Nero) and Lycoris, and they all booted.

Once in Linux, you can use something better, like X-CD-Roast.

That makes no difference if he's burning isos.

Well, he might have just burned the ISO straight to the CD that way it's just one file and didn't expand into multiple files.

Yes it does if he just burned it as a file on to the disc then it's not going to boot... but then again if he got an error message in the first place then he must have burned them right...

No, you misunderstand me. Whether or not he can burn isos to disc has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not those isos are bootable.

I had the same problem when I first tried installing Mandrake. Turns out that some CD/DVD drives can't properly boot non-Windows boot CD's. I had to boot from a floppy and run the Mandrake CD's from my burner. Never figured out why...

EDIT: As I understand it, most Linux distros have a small Windows partition on the first CD with a RAWRITE executable and disk image for a boot CD. Try that, and if you have a second CD drive available, try installing from it after a boot from floppy as well.

I had that same problem with Fedora and XP.  I think?  It gets you to the screen where it asks if you want to check your disks, right?  Even after checking them, it seems the first one was fuck-ed.  So I redownloaded it and reburned it, and had great success.

Also, I had an issue with the type of media.  Some cds I burned at home would not read in my Dell XP box, which has a DVD-RW/CD-RW.  The lasers are kinda picky.  Memorex "Cool Colors" cds aren't readable on that box.

And, make sure to check Fedora's bugzilla page, search for Anaconda, which is the installation program - any errors at that point in the process will be Anaconda errors, if they are install related.

Anyways, if it gets to the screen where it asks if you want to check the media, you should be ok.

My advice, redownload and reburn.
