LG's fault, not Mandrake's:

quote:
LG CD-ROM drives are not compliant with the ATAPI specification. The specification does not require an implementation of the FLUSH_CACHE command in the driver, and returning an error (or doing nothing) would have been the correct behaviour for the drive. Likewise, reusing a command is against the specification and LG has reused the FLUSH_CACHE command to modify the firmware of the drive, but they are unwilling to disclose exactly what the command does.

Oh for @%#$'s sake!

What idiot would design a CDROM that wipes it's firmware in response to a FLUSH_CACHE command????

LG is basically saying "It's your fault because we don't provide Linux drivers, so the LG drive should be unsupported in Linux.". Screw that. If the OSS community waited for official drivers than we'd had no KDE or Gnome running good.

LG has no excuse for reusing an ATAPI standard command such as "Flush-cache" to rewrite their firmware.

Thats like building a car that maps the hazard light switch to valve that dumps out all your engine oil.  If I had one of those drives I'd probably sue.

You shouldn't need a special driver to run your ATAPI CDROM.  The days of proprietary CDROM drives and drivers are GONE.

I'd prefer to say that Mandrake provided a workaround for defective hardware.

And yet again more proof that the open source community patches faster and more efficiently than the bi bad M$ thinktank.
