What's that?  The distressed cry of a frustrated Linux user?  I feel sorry for you, as I've gone through flaming hoops to set up certain hardware on Linux, but unfortunately each case is different.  I suggest you either look up the appropriate "HOW-TO" files on Google, or switch to Windows XP.

What kind of sound card is it?  Some of them just don't work at all due to proprietary drivers and specs or due to missing hardware on the card(similar to winmodems).  Also what distribution are you using?

hmmm, depending on the sound card and what version of linux, i for some reason think that enigma is a version of readhat so this should work
su to root

/sbin/sndconfig

that _should_ autodetect your sound card if not it should ask about the setting of the sound card like the irq and ioport, atleast last time i used it

Ahhh, RedHat 7.2. Nobody refers to RedHat by it's codename (Enigma for 7.2). I think that threw a bunch of us off. Yes, you should turn off your onboard sound. Most motherboards have jumpers or switches for this. Then open up a terminal (shell prompt, or Konsole) and type "su" which will prompt you for the root password. You should get a "#" prompt if successful.  Then type /sbin/sndconfig as chaosforages mentioned above or /usr/sbin/setup will get you to the same sound config program.

Really you shouldn't have to do any of this as after installing the card kudzu should pick up on it and set it up for you. A common mistake is thinking your sound card is not working when in fact the volume is just turned down all the way in your mixer. Run "kmix" which you should find on your multimedia menu and make sure the volume is turned up.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

You should be aware, that creative don't seem to be too forth coming on old hardware on linux. I have a creative soundcard (pci128) which gets recognized as an Ensoniq ES1371 (audio PCI-97) - which sounds generic.

Also are you running under KDE, because that can give lots of sound issues, unitil it's configured correctly. I'm working on this myself.
