System tray in Gnome?

I think the name of the thingy is system tray      

where all the docking icons go.

how do i get this on the gnome panel?

If you don't know what I'm talking about

Well there's really no "system tray" but you can add applets to your panel which hang out at the right of the screen.  For instance to add a clock, right click on the panel and hit add to panel -> accessories -> clock.  To add that volume control thingy, right click and choose multimedia -> volume control.
