Evil Entity HELP!!!!
« on: 6 April 2003, 06:42 »
Just installed Evil Entity Linux and need alittle help. First how do I change the screen resolution.
I know that's a stupid question but I'm stuck in 640 by 480. Second what would I type in console to configure my sound card?
BTW: I'm using the Enlightenment GUI and my sound card is a ess something, I forgot the name I'll have to write it down when I boot back into Mandrake.

I have never heard of "Evil Entity" Linux. Why someone would name their distro that is beyond me. When I saw this thread I thought somebody was believing that an evil Steve Ballmer entity had posessed their computer.   :D

You need to modify /etc/X11/XF86Config to suit your needs.

Just do "man XF86Config". It's actually pretty self-explained.

Once you're done editing it, save, and restart X.

Well I'm still not having any luck with Evil Entity. I tried editing the XF86Config but didnt have any luck so I launched xf86config from the console and tried reconfiguring it that way. I got the resolution working now but my mouse pointer is fooked up, whenever I move the mouse the pointer wants to go all over the place on the screen except in the direction I moved it. Also I have it installed on another harddrive and the only way I can figure out how to boot to it is to install it's boot loader which dont have an option to boot into Mandrake. The loader is Lilo so I guess theres a way to configure it. I tried to get Evil to work on Mandrakes loader which only gave me a kernal error of some sort. I'm gonna try again later to get it all working and if it doesnt I'm just gonna say fuck it and stick with Mandrake.

Actually, it's been getting rather popular lately. As to the reason behind the name:

Many say, "MS Windows has won, and the Linux Desktop is dead!" Now the Linux Desktop is UNDEAD, and it has risen from its crypt in search of virgin blood. Mortal operating systems will cower before the beast that has been unleashed upon them. Dismiss the weak and inferior, embrace the Evil and Possess your Box with EvilEntity.
It's based on Slackware, and to answer another question, yes, it does have a goth theme. You can find out more about it here: Undead Linux. It's still relatively new, and should probably be considered a "beta" distro.

That isnt really an error message, some of the packages dont need/have that file and it is just some output that didnt get redirected to /dev/null

well, go into the console and type "xf86config" it is a text based program to configure your card, i've found it much easier than doing it by hand.

he's done that and now his mouse is arsed. to be honest i think it's better to edit XF86Config by hand because of two reasons:
1) xf86config does not have questions relating to every possible section of a modern XF86Config file
2) when editing by hand you can change one section eg only the mouse section and not have to generate an entirely new file.

for that mouse thing, just open up your XF86Config file in a text editor and find the mouse section, now using the man page of XF86Config, edit your mouse section (probably the driver line) so it works, then save, then restart x. the driver is probably PS/2 but i hear it should be IMPS/2 which does the same job as PS/2 but with tons of other stuff too (like it can drive USB mice, and some funny nonstandard ones et cetera too)

This thing is possibly the coolest looking distro I have seen before.
A full out goth theme!  Nice, something to match my room.
If only it had the following things I'd install it:
It was stable. Quotes about fixing bugs by "not using a seperate /var or /usr partition" don't sound good
It was a bit more mature
Default webmin user/pass was root account instead of "admin/666"
It was based on Debian

Still looks cool, I must watch this distro.
Yesterday it worked
Today it is not working
Windows is like that
