i need windowsXP OFF my new laptop!!!
« on: 22 January 2003, 21:39 »
i bought a toshiba laptop yesterday

http://www.geocities.com/siplus01/files/Toshibapage.htm

(first model, 1.5ghz)

and it doesn't run well with XP. i want to install win2k and redhat8, but i need to know if i can find all the drivers (for redhat, i can find them myself for windows 2000) and utilites like the battery monitor and touchpad utility thing.

will redhat auto detect and install these 2 things (likewise, will i have to find them for win2k or will they install b/c it detects it in the laptop?)

My advice is simple. Just go ahead and do it. Just install and find out where you have problems. Then, if you have to, track down the extra drivers if you need them. This is after all the same technique you will use with M$ Windows 2000.

Either that or check the website of your distribution of choice for hardware support, with a toshiba it depends on what proprietary on-board hardware they used this time. There is a reason Toshiba are cheaper than HP.

Just do it man. As for autodetect, if it can it will.

Edit : And please can you edit your link so that it does not disply the entire link (use the URL function) because you are screwing up my display.

<B>"utilites like the battery monitor and touchpad utility thing."</B>

You probably won't have any problems with a battery monitor.  As for the touchpad utility, you probably won't find what you're looking for if it's made by Toshiba.

If it's a Synaptics Touchpad or Alps Glidepad/Stickpointer (Dell uses the Synaptics I believe, don't know about anyone else) then there is a touchpad utility called "tpconfig" which I use:

http://www.compass.com/synaptics/

There are RPMs for it and Debian packages as well. I use it to turn off all the extra garbage like tap modes and I decrease the sensitivity of the stupid thing..
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

I bought a toshiba myself, 1805-S204 1GHz, It runs crap with any version of windows (this is the honest truth, not biased at all), they do not have any linux support for their equipment... but with redhat 7.3, my laptop runs just fine with everything except the modem. But if you have another computer just make it a gateway for the toshiba. windows 2000 doesn't run much better than xp, just turn off all the crap on xp if you absolutely need windows. honestly though, linux runs a lot better than windows on my toshiba.

I also have a Toshiba Satellite 1400-103 (it's a European model I think) apart from my iBook. I have installed RedHat 8.0 effortlessly and haven't had any problems. As for the Touchpad it's an Alps Glidepad, at least on my Toshiba which must be the case for yours as well. APM works with some glitches on suspend and resume but what is most annoying is that the machine won't reboot. However it can be shut down properly. Almost forgot. If you plan to install SuSE 8.1, before installation pass the following option to the kernel

acpi=off

to turn off the acpi. Otherwise it will simply not work afterwards.

Here is another useful link:

-  The unofficial Toshiba Linux page

Oh, if you are on dialup, then the winmodem will propaby not work if it is an Agere Scorpio because of the AMR chipset.

Have fun getting rid of Winblows!   ;)

If one is so concerned about windows XP why didn't you buy an Apple laptop, they are far better.

because, and i don't like admitting this in front of soo many mac users here, i don't like apple/ mac's...i just have a personal thing against them.

i don't know why, i've never used one except the ancient ones that i used to use in school years ago

maybe i would like macs if i saw a modern one, but i have no desire whatsoever to ever touch a mac, sorry...
