Mandrake 9.0 (EE) No devices detected

I just finished the install and that's is the message it is giving me in a pop-up box (still in installer, txt mode) I tried Redhat 8.0 as well same thing, apparently it doesn't recognize my monitor.

I searched the net and found a few articles about this error but nothing really telling me how to fix it. BTW how does one get into XConfigurator or XConfig or whatever name it is in Mandrake 9.0, some people on the net were able to get their monitors working using this method. I had RH 7.3 on this machine/monitor combo a while ago and had no problems. . . Thanks

Is it the monitor or video card that it doesn't detect?  If it's the monitor then that is no sweat, just pick a generic one with the same capabilities yours (size, frequency, etc). If it's the video card then you have bigger problems.

But of course there is no way in hell that we can help you out without knowing *exactly* what piece of hardware is giving you trouble, and exactly what make/model it is.

The computer is a Packard Bell Multimedia 730, PII 266. I have a Compaq 151 FS monitor that I picked up at our school's surplus auction, and the vid card, which is onboard, is S3 Trio64V+.

Now that I have finished installing how do I get back into the config tool to fix these, thanks

for non red hat distros you need to type 'xf86config' at a prompt to setup your X server (note lower case). i hear that this is better to use than red hat XConfigurator anyway but i don't know.

There's you go, that's all the data you will need (and more). Put it into either /etc/X11/XF86Config or /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 depending on what distro you run. You will just need to put te correct values in for Horizsync and VertRefresh.

 should bring up a pretty good xconfigurater. also, check and see if your model of moniter has a more expensive "brother", cuase im running mine alittle bit higher then its supposed to, i just had to turn dpms off i think

I went through the steps in 'xf86config' and it says my card is "basically UNSUPPORTED"

Using xf86cfg it brings up what appears to be a GUI configurator but it has about 3 colors and is a lot larger than my monitor . . .

I think the problem is with my vid card

When you're in xf86config, after the monitor step it will say 'do you want to look at the card databse' or something like that. At this point enter 'y'. Keep pressing [Enter] until you see your vid card. Then tyep in its number xx and press [Enter].

I did and that's when it says my card is unsupported and that it may only work as a generic VGA-compatible card, then I used the generic vga-compatible, and it still does not work. Oh well, maybe I will just have to pick up a new vid card, does anyone else run this card by chance?

No, but I suggest an nVidia card. Their support in linux is the best you can get and you can pick up a GF2 for very very cheap nowadays.

don't forget that ati just realesed drivers, but as always research something before making a purcase. and for something not being supported, had almost the same issue with a sound card.

I work at Best Buy so I should be able to get a pretty sweet deal on a vid card, since the machine is old I may just get like a geforce 2 or something, like 40 before my discount. Thanks for all of the help everyone.

I like my Geforce2 card. The drivers that come with XFree are ok but the drivers from nVidia are outstanding (you probably won't notice the difference unless you run apps that need Accelerated X like VMware, Games, etc).

An "lspci -v" tells me I have a VisionTek nVidia GeForce2 GTS (with 32MB of video RAM). I really like this card. It's a PCI card and it was very inexpensive.
