partition magic and hdaX
« on: 12 January 2003, 05:38 »
i just got a new (160gb) hd, and have win2k, winXP, and redhat linux on it now...but i don't like the way i partitioned everything.
c:  hda1   20gb vfat
d:  hda5   40gb NTFS (couldn't make vfat for some reason)
e:  hda6   30gb vfat
f:  hda7   800mb swap
g:  hda8   20gb ext3
h:  hda9   20gb ext3
and 20 gb that niether windows nor bios recognise, but i'll use that later...

now, my c:\ has win2k, and i use that as my main windows, but it's almost filled up (i had originally planned to make c win98 and d win2k, but i changed my mind when 98 install gave me crap)

so i want to move like 20 gb from d: (hda5) to c: (hda1), but how will that affect the hda assignments, or will it?

g:- ext3 and h: - ext3??? Not possible.

I assume hda1 and hda5 are both FAT or NTFS (doesn't matter what they are really). You can shrink hda1 and increase the size of hda5 and it will not effect your drive letters or hda numbers. And man that is one big hard drive. 150GB! Also, that's an odd size for a swap partition, usually it should be some multiple of your RAM size but I haven't done any real tests myself to see how that might effect performance, if it does at all. On a side note I probably would have made some of the partitions smaller and leave a bunch of free space at the end of the drive just in case somewhere down the road you want to add another OS or two. But if you intend on using all of that space right away that wouldn't work for you.

hda8 is mounted as '/' and hda9 is mounted as '/stuff'. i did this b/c i'm going to have my friend dl another distro for me (thinking about mandrake, what do you ppl think would be a good distro to compare to the awesome RH8?) so i have 1 free partition to put that on, then i have 20 gb left that my bios/windows do not recognise that i can do something with (maybe eventually i'll try bsd)
----------
my swap is 800mb b/c i have 384 mb of ram, so i just rounded up.
----------
also, my harddrive is 160gb, but linux only recognises 151gb (not complaining...it's a huge amount of space, i just want to compare to:
my bios: 136gb
windows2k: both 129 and 131gb (depends on where you look)

I was just stating Linux partitions do not use Drive Letters. Drive letters are for brain dead DOS/Windows and FAT/NTFS partitions. Your list of partitions show three Linux partitions listed with drive letters and I said that was impossible, because it is.
