Dr kelso; Didn't you get my memo about looking professional, and whereing your lab coat at all times?

Dr. Cox; well you know what? i did...and i threw it away. But then i didn't feel like that was a strong enough gesture so i erected a life like figure of you out of straw, put my lab coat on it, put your memo in the pocket, and invited all the local neighborhood children to light it on fire and beat it with sticks!

heard it on Scrubs, quite possibly the funniest show on tv

MPlayer!

http://www.mplayerhq.hu/homepage/

It is still in version 0.9, and will require some tweaking, but it really works well.  It can play not only real media files, but it can also play windows media files as well.  For that you have to download the codecs, and configure with them enabled.  They are also available from mplayers site.  I myself have had trouble getting it to embed in Mozilla, and have not been able to use the gui.  To use the GUI you need gtk 1.2 and all I have is 2.0 (don't quote me on this one, there may be a workaround).  I could really see this player becoming standard in Linux.

V 0.8.7

cool, thanks! i've come across mplayer before, but i no idea it could play streaming audio.

and x12, even the linux version of real audio will have a death grip on your machine, so i hear anyway.

They are on the download page "win32 codecs":
http://ftp.lug.udel.edu/MPlayer/releases/w32codec.tar.bz2

Untar/bz them and put them in a directory called "/usr/lib/win32".

Did you install those codecs in /usr/lib/win32? I don't have any problems with any DivX format (3/4/5) and even WMV Microsoft files. Hmmmm, I also have the "libquicktime-opendivx" and "divix4linux" RPMs installed but I don't believe MPlayer needs anything in those. At least not according to the man page.

yeah, i extracted the win32 codec to that directory and recomiled the source...

i have the latest divx4linux (which i believe is 5.1), but not libquicktime-open divx. so i guess i'll give that a shot.

Hmmm, one thing I don't see in this thread is which Linux distribution and version are you running?

make sure you have the latest version of all the software that mplayer uses then recompile. stuff like real codecs, the win codecs. and make sure it picks them up and says that they are selected to be used
