FreeBSD Network

I have been given the OK to build a small FreeBSD network at School
   I have the mini version
   no internet connection directly to these machines but access to a 10 MBS line and a cd burner
i was wondering:

1. What would be the best Gui for this, i will be trying to set up a file server and a mail server.

2. what would be the best free software for the above mentioned purposes. also a word processor and graphics program. /*all has to fit into 600 meg*/

3. will it boot of the mini cd? or will i have to make a boot floppy. and how do i do this /*im a MacMan*/

The machines are PI 100mhz with between 8-32 meg of ram and about 600 meg HD's

Blackbox.
openoffice?
the gimp?
openoffice and gimp are pretty big, arent they?
Blackbox is almost a must if you want a GUI, due to it being fast and small.

are they desktop machines and one of them just happens to be a mail/file server??

Xcdroast will burn CDs, Gcombust is alright too.

abiword, and gimp. just don't install all the devolopoment packages like gcc and such and you should be able to make it and as for being a mac man, welcome to the shit osx is made from

and that depends, i would have used the full cd in the first place, the full cd is disc1 off there website, you don't need all the other discs becuase the first disc has all the common software, as for booting off a cd, that depends on whether the machines bios will let you do, you would have to change the boot order in the bios to get it to boot from cd.

NFS works as a great file server, or if you are using windows in this network, samba would work also.

another thing

/stand/sysinstall
is your friend, it is the "control center" of FreeBSD

when I installed FreeBSD the first time, it fucked up the MBR, but that was my fault. i'm preparing to install it and netbsd in a few hours.

They are all desktops and one just happens to be a server.

I might be able to get some old mac to put onto this network as well, they will be running debian most likely. Will these interface correctly? Also how big is Apache?
