Help with a noisy buzzing cooling fan
« on: 2 November 2003, 05:06 »
I'm not sure where to post this, since this is a hardware question.

My computer has been incessantly making a buzzing noise as soon as I turn it on.  Usually, it would go away in a few minutes, but now it never goes away.  I have to turn the computer off at night just so I can sleep.

Any ideas what could be causing the noise, and how to stop it?

Help with a noisy buzzing cooling fan

I had a similar problem on one I built.  It was one of those fans that can be jacked front and back.  without thinking I plugged my fan into the main cable and one of my hard drives into the fan.  The result was underpowering that caysed an annoying buzzing sound that took a while before it started doing it, then it would only do it after it had been on a while, and eventually would always do it.  I looked at it and realised that I had plugged a hard drive through it causing the hard drive to pull the power from the fan resulting in the buzz.  I unplugged my fan and thought about it this time and put it on something less power demanding, like an empty plug or the A:\ drive.  Buzz is now and forever gone.

Yup, this should probably be posted elsewhere to answer your other question

Wow, that's really interesting American Bastard... I had never heard of that power thing making a fan buzz.  I'll have to keep that in mind.

If the power thing doesn't help you, capt obvious, Then you should make sure the fan is well secured (not loose).  If that isn't the problem, the bearings are likely failing in the fan.

the fan was an ultra quiet turbine pci slot fan.  though they don't draw a lot of power, they do require a specific amount of power or they start to act all kinds of goofy.
