Dual Boot with 2.5 GB Left

I have a 20 GB hard drive with about 2.5 GB of space left.  After reading Redhat 9 Documentation and downloading it I have tried to install it on my system.

I chose custom installation so I could pick and choose what I needed because of my low amount of space.  However, when I chose the option "Keep all existing partitions and use avaliable free space" installation would not let me proceed.  I am assuming because I am trying to install Linux with only 2.5 GB left.

I have a couple questions.  First off, just how much hard drive space does Linux Redhat 9 take up?  I know it says around 1.7 GB for a personal workstation installation, but does it actually consume that much space?

Before I get any messages saying I should wipe off Windows completely I want to say that unfortunately I must continue using it.  Although I hate Microsoft many of the good music making programs are made only for Windows.  Thus, I am chained to Microsoft forever.

Before resigning to that thought, I suggest you take a look at this page:

What kind of things do you do for music making?  Audio recording?  MIDI-sequencing?  Music Notation?

I'm afraid I don't know how to answer your main question, though.

I use synth programs like Steinberg Cubase and Propellerhead Reason.

2.5 gigs should be more than ample for any distro.  However Red Hat can be a bitch, last time I tried to install it it had a whine because "Minimum partition size is 80 meg!"  Ooh, like I need 80 meg for /boot you silly thing.  Excuse me while I go off and jump up and down on a Red Hat CD.

Get another harddrive and install it to that.
For one, you won't be installing it to a slower part of the drive.
And you can (on most systems) choose which drive to boot with in the BIOS - pretty easy once you get used to it. A few more keystrokes than a boot menu, but much safer.

ok, red hat won't install to that unless you select "minimal install" and then it'll be a bit of a push. some other distros take less size, but i think you'll want more especially if you want multimedia stuff going on.

i'd suggest getting another drive and sticking mandrake on it to be honest.

I've used less than 2.5 gb of my Red Hat root partition, and I have far more than the minimal installation, and everything I've installed since.

Saturninus, if you can't free more space, why don't you try Knoppix instead? You can install Red Hat later after you decide Linux is for you.
(You can still use Linux for most things and Windows for music making.)
