Is RedHat 8.0 hiding things?
« on: 24 October 2002, 05:38 »
Ok, I found out that my SiS7012 sound is supported in 2.4.28 so i am trying to install redhat 8.0, but whenever it goes to the zlib package the install fails. I did the media check. I even burned it again and did the media check. It still didnt work.
Now obviously i am gonna have to leave out zlib but it isnt anywhere in the package listing. Does redhat hide certain packages from being chosen (unchosen)??!! If they do then they can fuck off and die.

If you are having trouble with Linux, perhaps you should switch.

Ooooh! How scandalous!
Shame on you m0r!   :D      :D      :D

As for RH hiding packets, I dunno. I haven't had any problems of the sort. Maybe it's just not there?

I believe zlib is a very important base package for things like Apache etc. I found something on bugzilla that I believe to be the same problem you are having. I found several reports about the install crashing on zlib install and they seem to lead here:

My only problems with RH8:

1)Still can't get the dual boot out of the box. If it's impossible then fine, but Mandrake 8.2 worked perfect for automated dual boot set up. Why can't they steal some source code or somethin?

2)Even though it knows I had a wind0ze drive, did it mount it? Nope. Libranet, Lycoris, Mandrake, they all mounted it. I'd actually have to go through the trouble of asking you guys how to mount my wind0ze drive(which I haven't done yet because of my sad forced drive migration).

It doesn't mean it sucks, it just means that Redhat has some oversights. RH8 may of been a long time coming, so it has alot of new stuff/changes. All these problems from the new stuff is finally getting found out as it's released into millions of hands.

That's odd, I installed it on my desktop with a triple boot setup. I would guess you must have missed something on the install screens. Unless there is something different about XP if that is what you are trying to dual boot. I don't have XP, nor will I ever have XP so I can't be of much help there.

RedHat will not "automatically" add your other operating systems, when you get to the boot loader configuration you have to "add" your other OSs to the boot loader there. This is what I am referring to.

No, it knows Wind0ze is there. It has a wind0ze option on the boot menu, but it just stops the boot when I try it. UNLESS you are refering to having to configure this Windows entry they put in, myself.

Hmmm, is it XP that you are trying to dual boot? I didn't have a problem with it at all. I don't remember doing anything special on the install, in fact now that you mention it it detected it and set it up automatically and worked. But like I said, I don't have XP so if you do that may be the difference. I have a tri-boot RH8/Win2k/Win98 (I've only booted into the Win versions maybe twice since installing RH8 though).

Uh, I don't believe it's a media problem. I get the idea according to bugzilla that it doesn't matter whether you are using the purchased CDs or the downloaded CDs (which are the same BTW for the personal edition). But it obviously is only a problem on certain hardware configurations (considering m0r b0b is the only one of us who's had the problem). Must have something to do with shady CD-ROM drives. There is a patch that you can download and stick on floppy, then load it during the install process which is supposed to fix the install problem.

Hmmm sounds like I may have a bug that's in most Linux distros? Do you think if I went to Redhat about it, they would help me solve the problem, just to confirm it's not a bug due to using Redhat on my comp? Would be a good deal(cuz their e-mail tech support is not free)...

That's true. I've never had a problem in all of my years of using Linux that I couldn't figure out on my own though. So what happens if he buys his copy, has this problem, and calls RedHat and they not be able to help? Do you ask for your money back? I mean just because you have support doesn't mean they *have* to solve your problem but chances are they will. I would call Microsoft and tell them their stupid OS won't boot RedHat and see how far you get.

Already does what? Who doesn't understand? Must be me, because I have no idea what you are talking about.
