I'd like to switch...

Hey there, i'm new here. I'm quite fed up with windows ME, and microsoft in general. So, I wanted to switch. Which linux is best? Also, what should I expect for program support? This is a family computer, so certain programs would need to run, like quicken. Also, does photoshop work in linux? Is there anything else I should know before trying to switch? Thanks.

I would pick SuSE 9.0 Pro, as it was designed for Linux newbies. You can pick up the ISO's (cd images) from any filesharing program. When you install it, it automatically resizes the NTFS partition to fit Linux on it (for those who want to use Windoze too).

When you use any distro, you want to make sure it has a version of apt-get in it. Sometimes when you install a program, it needs a few other programs installed, and those need a few libraries installed, and those need programs installed - it's called Dependancy Hell. Apt-get is designed to find all common programs and libraries on apt repository servers, so that to install a program you need dependancies for you just go to apt for it. Using apt-get is easy to get used to and will save you a shitload of time looking for dependancy's on google, IMO.

If I wanted to buy it, would I lose much in getting personal edition? Also, the pro edition has a double dvd, do you have to use that, as I don't have a dvd drive?

If you were to buy a copy, it probably will come with more software than the downloaded version. My pick for SuSE is the Wine Rack. It comes with WineX for windows games, and crossover office for dreamweaver/flash/MS Office, and should make the transition from windows to linux easier. I believe it is $39.99
