NT Server Install vs RedHat
« on: 6 March 2002, 07:52 »
Ok gang today I installed NT Server AND RedHat 6.2 as  a dual boot system for a lab exam in my network design class.  People are always saying how much easier winblows is to install.

I found that RedHat was MUCH easier to install than NT....it only took about 10 minutes to get Linux installed and ....like 1.5 hours to get Winblows NT installed right( DHCP server + IIs + router).

I mean this was not even a fair fight...winblows got creamed....Linux is victorious once again.

Having never installed NT 4 Server or RH 6.2, I cannot say anything that way. However, I have installed Win2k Advanced Server and Windows.net Beta3 Build 3590, and both were easy as pie to set up.

I guess if ease of install is a something you look at for installing an OS then Microsoft will more then likely always win.  They have had quiet a number of years to develop an installation interface and perfect it to where the average 5 year old could install the OS.  Look at the big pretty buttons.  But this is something i dont look for in an OS.  I ont want my installer to make assumptions of what i want, i dont want things dictating to me how to setup and configure.  This is one of the reasons i use slackware.  i choose the packages i want even though i have the capability of removing some that can break the OS, slackware doesnt question my sanity.  Slackwares installer goes far enough to ask what the hostname is, what ip to use on the interface.  It doesnt whine about auto-configuring X or anthing like that.  Windows might be easy to install but what do you get in the long run?  A broken OS that you have little control over.  Thank you Microsoft for addressing the issues that need addressing.
If ignorance is bliss, why aren't there more happy people?

Having to install both NT Server and Linux many many times over the last several years I couldn't agree more that Linux is by far easier to set up and configure and a fraction of the setup time.  Of course both OSs can have automated setup scripts if you do an install the common way by time you reboot your server 40,000 times and waiting for the RAID controllers and BIOS checks that take at least several minutes per reboot in NT on high end servers and the single (1) reboot that Linux requires there is no match!  Hell on many Dell 2300 servers with certain PERC RAID controllers you can't even boot NT from CD and still be able to detect your hard drives, you must boot the installation from floppy. Linux has no problem with this. A full Linux install on most high end servers takes about 10-15 minutes.  You can spend hours fighting with NT.
