GNU = GNU is Not Unix
BSD = Berkley Sofware Development

basically different flavours of unix.

Hi,

GNU = Linux ... http://www.gnu.org/

BSD = Unix (Generally System 5 based) http://www.bsd.org/

You should use Linux to start with, once you are happy that you can fly it, then take a look at one of the BSD varients.

BSD is generally a server OS and you need to know what you are doing to get it configured correctly. It is however VERY, VERY SECURE AND RELIABLE AS YOU CAN SEE HERE http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/today/top.avg.html

Wrong. Linux is just the kernel. When discussing a GNU/Linux system, the discussion is talking about a system running the Linux kernel, along with the GNU tools.

Oh come on, you can't bag a man for wanting to be semantically correct, especially given the work he's done for Free Software.  (ooh FS and G/L in one post am I a zealot now?     )

edit:

GNU - write a lot of Free Software that all GNU/Linux users use.

Linux - one (albeit very important) piece of software that all GNU/Linux users use.

BSD - write a lot of software used by GNU/Linux and BSD users.  I use a few BSD servers, they use a lot of GNU stuff too.  It's a sharing thing.  

There are philosophical differences between the three groups, any one of them will get pissed off if you confuse them with another group.  (rightfully so IMO)

Unix - the OS (family) GNU, Linux, Mac OSX and BSD are based on / members of.

No, it is a sizable portion of the OS but not the whole thing.  Both GNU programs and the Linux kernel go together to make one whole OS.   ;)

to kinda break it down, I'll give you the name of a Linux component and translate it to Windows and Mac OS X

Linux: X11
Windows: GDI
Mac OS X: Quartz

Linux: KDE or Gnome
Windows: Explorer
Mac OS X: Finder

Linux: window manager
Windows: Luna or Windows Classic UI
Mac OS X: Aqua

So, as root@localhost said:

(Linux Kernel)-(GNU Utilities)-(Xwindows)-(KDE/GNOME/WMaker/IceWM)-(Applications)-(You)

or

(Windows Engine)-(NT libs)-(GDI)-(Luna)-(Apps)-(you)

or

(Mach)-(Darwin utils)-(Cocoa layer)-(Quartz)-(Apps)-(you)

honestly all OSes use a similar separation of their components. what the components are, how they work, and how it appears to you can differ drastically
