How to convert others to linux?
« on: 9 December 2002, 16:50 »
Hello all
Was just wondering how I can convince my (primarily XP using) friends that Linux is great?  They seem consigned to just put up with their dodgy OS, rather than go through the effort of learning how to use a new better OS.  Their main arguments are that linux has quote pathetic games support end quote and that it would not be worth the effort of backing up partitioning installing learning a new OS.  How can I, a mere newbie, show them the light of this wonderful OS?

BTW, to whom it may concern thanks for the _fantastic_ site, and would any of you guys/gals mind if I ask some newbie questions about linux stuff? At the moment I am still very much in the learning phase...  (I will of course try and remember to rtfm  :D  )

I think it's more important that people not use Microsoft products than that they specifically use Linux. (I just happen to think that Linux is the best free alternative, which is why I use it.)

Have you told your friends how crap Microsoft is? If they have a smidgen of ethics in their bodies, they wouldn't want to touch any of that company's products ever again. Not even with a ten-foot pole.

If that doesn't work, try something like Knoppix.
As sure as eggs is eggs.

thanks for the idea Master, (lol) actually flogging some of my friends sounds fun... 8-)
and speaking of an OS fucking up I was too scared of screwing over my data to install linux originally... but then an XP screw up corrupted my hdd... shoved it in a friends computer as slave and could only recover the stuff i wasnt desperate to save... I must remember to thank Bill for screwing me over, removing the only obstacle to a linux install and pissing me off enough to try a fantastic OS... he has actually done something for me after all!

BTW, love the Bob page...

i've gotten so far 3 of my friends to try to install linux. one of them actually had it before i knew what linux was, but couldn't use it, and the others know nothing of computers, so i have a lot of work getting them prepared for linux. one of my best friends screwed up his computer and i'm trying to fix it right now, but i keep getting many errors that makes me think that it is a hardware problem, which will not be good cause i voided the warrenty   :(  by trying to fix it.

anyway, it shouldn't be too hard to convice ppl that linux is better, especially if they know you are good w/ computers and help them out.

hey master-- what is bob?

hi!

First of all, u are not supposed of going around convincing people to use linux..People should understand the GNU model and the idea behind free software.

One should'nt care less if ur using linux. Also, linux is only the kernel, and was put into the incomplete GNU OS which Dr Stallman has worked for so much.

The GNU movement is not about building something mean against Microsoft. It's all about freedom from the shackles of proprietory software and of course ethics.

We have to make people understand of what GNU is and how to contribute back to the community.

Pls head over to www.gnu.org and understand the concepts throughly.

thanks,
007

My question is that after they have been working on Hurd for so long now, will it be something revolutionary, or will it fail due to the success of linux?

Ask the people what it's worth to them to have a (virtually) viru-free OS ... I do, especially after people have encountered lots of frustration after their Outlook Express encountered another worm viru ...  :D

It is VERY VERY inportant that u specify and make it clear that it is Free as in Freedom and NOT something to do with paying zero or no money at all....When u say, that it's free in terms of money, pl get the idea that its some cheap stuff etc..

Though its difficult, they NEED to understand and grasp  the concepts of GNU..

thanks,

I  had asked the a similar question to Dr Stallman when he had come down to India, but he seemed to avoid the question and did'nt give a very convincing answer..

Once its complete though, I guess we would have to start calling it GNU/Hurd instead of GNU/Linux.

Oh well, the whole process would start all over again and the saga continues......

Thinking of joining the cult of Bob Master of Reality? But thinking is wrong! 8-)
No probably not, ramming my head into a wall and eating hamsters does not sound like fun!

Sorry agent 007, I will try and mend my newbie ways. 8-(

What is Hurd?

Virus free is kinda good wuck... no more virus scans  taking up over two hours of my time... But as linux becomes more popular with people wont the [expletive]heads that write virus' start writing some for linux? I had got the (tell me if im wrong) impression that linux was virus free because certain ppl want to do the most damage... and doing the most damage meant damaging the most popular OS. If virus writing for linux becomes popular wont everyone be caught by surprise? I mean there are no linux virus scanners... like i said correct me if im wrong.
