Please help me with making an ext2 partition...
« on: 10 September 2002, 00:03 »
OK here's my problem:

I finally had enough free space, my little brother was away, my parents too, so what better time to install Linux?

I started PartitionMagic, opened the Wizard and when I clicked on "Next" at "Specify location for new partition" the programme said: "A new partition could not be created on drive 1.".

I have a NTFS partition. Could anyone give me some advise or point out some alternatives?

[EDIT]I have 1.6 GB of free space[/EDIT]

Do you have that 1.6GB of free space as "unpartitioned free space" or just free space in your NTFS partition?  Before you can create a new partition you must "shrink" the existing partition and create free "unpartitioned" space at the end of the drive.

Then you can create a new partition in that unpartitioned space. However, you don't really need to create the partition with Partition Magic, but you do need to use it to shrink the existing partition.  Once you have the free unpartitioned space you should be able to install Linux which will create a new partitions in the free unpartitioned area.
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...
