respawning??
« on: 16 April 2002, 06:14 »
hey, my computer (red hat 7.2) keeps coming up with an error: id "x" respawning too fast, disabled for 5 minutes. It says this every 5 minutes. WHat does it mean?

I usually see this on a "getty/mgetty" process configured in /etc/inittab when you have your machine configured for dialin and the serial port/modem is not configured properly, or mgetty is not configured properly.  Look in your /etc/inittab for the "id" that is having a problem.

I had the same problem with Mandrake. In my case, it was caused by selecting 3-D support during the install. What I needed was a new video driver from nVidia and the support library. These can be downloaded for free and installed to solve the respawning problem. Or you could ditch the 3-D support; then you won't need new drivers. I've tried it both ways, and I can't see what good it does anyway.

Maybe you weren't wearing your 3-D glasses?

so far, i've been too lazy to go try to fix it. If i were to go to my server right now, the screen would be filled with those messages.

Actually i recall getting those messages last time i installed redhat on a different computer, it had a 3D graphics card, but i'm on that computer with redhat 7.2 (i recently re-installed for some inane reasons) and that error message has never come up again.
