Look up the IP address of the ftp server 1st and note the specific path to the SUSE 9.0 files for the server you will use. Get the IP address with nslookup or a website that does DNS lookup. e.g. "ftp.suse.com" is 195.135.221.130
Boot the ftpboot CD. Choose Manual Install.
As you said, load the kernel module for your ethernet card.
Config your network for DHCP or static.
When you are asked enter the IP address.
You will be asked to specify the directory where the install source is too, enter the REST of the path for the install files from the root of the server, e.g. for the ftp.suse.com server it would be:
pub/suse/i386/9.0/
Off you go. Wait
If OpenOffice1.1 fails (as it did for me) just Ignore it to carry on with the rest of the install, then install it afterwards manually.
