I want to put SuSe 9.0 on my laptop and it's frustrating me. This FTP nonsense it's like they don't want us to get it for free.  Anyone know how to install it from their FTP..namely the IP of the mirror.  I got the modules for my ethernet installed, and language selected.  Then I put the address of the mirror into the box and it froze.  I tried "linux install=ftp.suse.dfklhaslgj" you know at the boot prompt and nothing happened.  lil' help anyone?

"No" is the answer!
The nice thing about Windows is - It does not just crash, it displays a dialog box and lets you press 'OK' first.

Look up the IP address of the ftp server 1st and note the specific path to the SUSE 9.0 files for the server you will use. Get the IP address with nslookup or a website that does DNS lookup. e.g. "ftp.suse.com" is 195.135.221.130

Boot the ftpboot CD. Choose Manual Install.

As you said, load the kernel module for your ethernet card.

Config your network for DHCP or static.

When you are asked enter the IP address.

You will be asked to specify the directory where the install source is too, enter the REST of the path for the install files from the root of the server, e.g. for the ftp.suse.com server it would be:

pub/suse/i386/9.0/

Off you go. Wait    If OpenOffice1.1 fails (as it did for me) just Ignore it to carry on with the rest of the install, then install it afterwards manually.

I really should learn to keep my mouth shut...I always figure it out right after I post on a forum...so I've looked like an idiot and ended up helping myself anyway.

oh well.  Thanks to both of you, I'm going to go install yet another version of Linux on yet another computer...hehe.

You can get some Win tools to do it, but probably quickest to use a website or do Start->Run->tracert ftp.suse.com
(or whatever server you choose), Google for "DNS lookup" and you get sites like this:

http://cgibin.erols.com/ziring/cgi-bin/nsgate/gate.pl

If you choose a mirror server close to you from here:

http://www.suse.com/us/private/download/ftp/int_mirrors.html

Go and have a look at the server directory structure in a browser and make note of the full path AFTER the hostname for that server (these may vary), you'll need it when you install. It will usually be something like "pub/ <something> /suse/i386/9.0/"

I can understand that a little... Mandrake has also been hinting this (though ISO's are still available).  The Linux companies haven't been doing too well lately...  :(
