I hear installing programs under linux can be a pain what exactly is the process of installing something fairley complicated

That's a fairly complicated question that would require a fairly complicated answer depending on the fairly complicated application that you would be installing on your fairly complicated version of Linux.         Actually installing most things are actually easier than they are in Windows.. That is as long as there is a "package" for it in the format of your favorite Linux distrubution's "package format". It can be as simple as:

# apt-get install applicationname

Which will automatically download and install the latest release of the application in question right off the network. But it can get quite complicated in certain circumstances if there isn't a prebuild package for your distribution. Even then it's not *that* bad.
