SCO starts suing Linux users
« on: 3 March 2004, 23:29 »
SCO has sued a company for using a Linux OS, claiming that doing so violates their copyrights.

Article

This makes me wonder two things:
1. Will they eventaully start trying to sue general home Linux users like the RIAA

2. How is OSX safe from this? It's basically a Linux distro too.

OSX is not basically a linux distro. Its not even close to linux. So, OSX is very safe.

Exactly what do they think they own?  And which distro does AutoZone use?  The article was kinda unclear.

But OSX is Unix, which SCO claims to own.

There are two Unix derivatives, System-V and BSD.  SCO claims to own System-V; the BSD one is owned by someone else (maybe still Berkeley).

How do you figure that? The issue is that SCO is claiming there is SCO-copyrighted code in Linux, and OSX uses Darwin, not Linux.

There is absolutely no way that SCO could beat Autozone in a case. Autozone would have to have used linux knowing that some of SCO's code was in it to be guilty, but since SCO has yet to prove that linux has any of SCO's code, Autozone wouldn't have known they were illegally using SCO's product. Worst case scenario, AutoZone drops linux and pics up BSD......lol

Yes, it's not close to linux (it's BSD).

No it's not safe.  Darl and Co are starting to claim they own everything under the sun that is even remotely unix related.  They have repeatedly said that BSD has violated the settlement.

kinda interesting, Apple could easily drop the BSD layer and build their own new OS underneath OS X

no BSD all of a sudden

Darwin is based on the MACH+BSD kernel.  It would be non-trivial to throw away the kernel and write an effective replacement from scratch.

Er no. It would take quite a bit of development to do that and they would lose support for the numerous UNIX applications that already run on OSX. Unless they intend to rewrite Unix from scratch. Which is just retarded. I would see Apple being like every other intelligent company and laughing at SCO like the rest of us. SCO is full of bullshit and they need to be put in prison for the kinds of things they are doing right now.

There, Darl and pals gets raped just like in Retarded Animal Babies 8 (see Newgrounds.com).

Why do people like you even try to have a clue.

Your life is pointless, kill your inner-process now.

OS-X is not Linux, its Darwin, there is more linux in the lining of my nutsack then OS-X.

They think they own every line of the kernel.

The suit could also create liabilities for SCO, he says."If their lawsuit isn't well founded, they could at a minimum be subject to sanctions,"he says."If IBM feels that the SCO claim isn't well founded, they could actually sue SCO for tortious interference."

That part particularly interested me
I hope that SCO's lawsuits fall through, and not only that, i hope that IBM turn around and say "hey, wassat all about, innit!" and sue them in return.
