BSD vs Linux

i'm going to just start by asking: what is the main differnce between the two?

i know bsd is older, it uses a different kernal, and i heard somewhere that networking in bsd is better then in linux. but bsd and linux are both unix based, so what can be all that different?

depends on style, like i am living without hardware exelerated gl becuase im using a -CURRENT *bsd, but it is far more solid then linux at some things. but linux has the hardware support for alot of odd things that *bsd doesn't. but im going back to linux and -STABLE once i get my new computer.

The way I understand it, BSD is more targeted toward those wanting to run servers, while Linux is more targeted at general computer use.

uh, well this is an interesting thread : )

i downloaded FreeBSD, and i'm going to install it on my computer that has mandrake and redhat (and win2k, xp). i assume the directory structure is similar to linux. what filesystem does bsd use? will it install a bootloader?

Speaking in Steve Balmer, at one point in time, he used to scan porn and putting it on the Microsoft file server (this was in '95 or '97... hehehe).

I love FreeBSD, its all I use for both servers and my desktop.  The ports are great.  Just an FYI, the freebsd handbook is an excellent source of information.

yes, the handbook rules, not only do they give you one of the best operating systems out their, they give you a damned good book on how to put it to good use. and yes, the bsd directory layout is simalar to linux's, but it is more organized. also the ports system is wonderful, it's magic level is rated at "capible of alternate dimensionale black magic and beyound"  while choas himself is only rated at "black voodoo magic"/*compile XFree86, or the jdk by hand, then use the ports system to do it, you will painfully realize what im talking about */ and the package system know's were to get crack from, it doesn't plague me about it dependancy's like another one does, *cough RPM cough* and it only install's a boot loader if you tell it to. and remember, it is way easyer to use /boot/loader as the kernel on a freebsd system then to try to get lilo or grub to directly boot the kernel. and grub treats /boot/loader like a kernel, so no chainloader magic needed. and the kernel is very easy to compile, read the handbook for that, and ask me some options to make things run a bit better. well have fun with *bsd, thats what its all about ya know
