Crossover plugin
« on: 26 January 2003, 15:28 »
Has anyone had any luck with the Crossover plugin yet?
I installed the demo version yesterday and had mixed results.

I only installed the Quicktime plugin, basically it's just the Windows Quicktime installer in a Wine jacket.
Some QT movies didn't play, some did, the ones that did already played with mplayer.
There's this highly annoying splash screen that reminds you to buy the plugin like every 15 seconds, you can't make it go away and it blocks your image completely ....

Plus since I installed the Crossover plugin, when surfing to some websites my pc would sometimes hang for 10-15 seconds.
I ran "Top" and saw that in these cases Wine and pluginserver were consuming 95% of my cpu cycles and a lot of memory.

I uninstalled and everything is back to normal now (thank god there's an uninstall shell script provided with it).

Just curious if any of you had better results?

I had similar experiencess with the version that came with Mandrake 8.2. Anyway, with OO and mplayer I don't need crossover.

OO?

Ok, neither do I really need that plugin (been fine without it until now) but I thought I'd try it to see if I could play ALL QT movies, I have quite a lot of guitar clips and stuff in .mov format and not all of them play in mplayer.

And since SuSE seems to make quite a fuss around that plugin I expected it to be ..... hmmmm, effective?

Ah, Open Office!!
I didn't even think of that one, since I've started using it I avoid using/reading M$ formats.

Instead when I receive an attachment with an M$ format I ask the sender to save it in .txt or .rtf format and send it to me again.
