newbe question on hardware drivers
« on: 29 March 2003, 04:28 »
Hi,

well ive just converted over to mandrake 9.1 and as ive never used linux b4 I have a couple of questions about drivers.

1st, i have a radeon 9700 pro and the only selection im shown is ATI radeon or radeon 8500. is this right. what should i be looking at. i tried the 3d game on mandrake, it was all slow and crap to run but as im a novice im doing it the Microsoft way arent i.

2nd, I have an external USB hard disk but it does not seem to come up, as also my wireles USB adapter that i use to connect to another pc running windoesnt that supplies my internet connection.

am i limited in the drivers for my hardware or are there generic types out there that may work.

so far i like the way linux works but i would like it so much more if i could get my hardware running especially my ATI 9700(please tell me what cool games i could use on it too please)

any help please
stop dinging my van and driving off cos im gonna smack your teeth in.........

well whatr chipset is ur usb wireless card based on? if it is prism2 you could try http://linux-wlan.com/. they have some really good wireless driver support. Also it is pretty easy to set up and if need be i could halp you out with it some. The USB harddrive could be a problem though and i am not sure howto help you with that one.
you know its a bad day when you look more sober then usual

What I among everyone else will recommend is that you read the readme/install text files that are on the sites or in the packages you download.

As for being like m$ they are not very similar. No real GUI tools - just stuff like make install/RPM.

good luck
