theres that profanity again.
I installed staroffice a while ago and most of the time when i start i get a different error message each time.
The first time it said there was a bad file (or 1 missing) and repaired it. Then it did it again. Then I ran from the konsole as superuser and it worked. then I tried opening about 12 different prgrams and X restarted and closed them all. Now I tried it (from console as SU) and it just says 'aborted' and exits. Now i tried again and it says it cant open the DISPLAY. Might it be time to restart Linux?
What the hell was the point of dling staroffice mere minutes before i had to pay for it is it doesnt even work.

I actually had to restart Linux. I was doing things iwth programs in KDE and then hit ctrl-alt-F1 to switch to a terminal and it just froze. I waited a couple seconds, tried a couple things, and it wasnt doing anything at all. I was forced to restart (ctrl-alt-del)... There goes two weeks of uptime. Now staroffice works though.

I use StarOffice and the only problem I had was when I tried to install it as root....but when I installed it as user(insert_name_here) it installed fine and works every time.

Why I think I might even do my ERD diagrams on it...yeah thats it....uhm can StarOffice do Chen diagrams?

No wonder no one uses Star Office.  No one would use it even if Sun gave it away for free! (which they actually do, up to version 5.2)

Too bad you can't run some real software on Linux, like MS Office.

Why do you say that?  Star Office is an absolute resource hog and takes about 10 seconds or more to load on even a relativly fast machine.  I use Office 2000 and experience no problems at all.  At least Office 2000 doesn't render fonts crappily like Star Office does.  MS Office may be a little "ahem" because MS doesn't use open file formats (for obvious reasons) but it is loaded with every feature you could possibly want, and most people couldn't do their jobs without it.  Heck, I much prefer KOffice to staroffice, at least koffice isn't bloated as hell.  Hancom Office looks interesting (it uses the QT toolkit) but it costs money.

In fact, star office is so lousy that Sun released the source code, since it is worthless to them anyway.

That must be why the thousands of programs licensed under the GPL also have released their souorce, huh winXPiss luser? If you really have that outlook about Open Source then there is something seriously wrong with you

I us eOpenOffice, but some of the things apply for Star Office as well.

Install it as root.  then run the setup program that is in the install directory(somewhere in /usr).  Choose workstation installation and it will set it up so there is a folder in your home directory, and there should be a program in there that you run.

btw- Xpiss, the source was released becuase Sun has begun to realize that Open Source is good.  It allows them to have bugs fixed faster through it's sister software, OpenOffice.

All the lies, lies, lies, lies!  The only time a software developer releases the source code to one of its programs is when it has officially died.  Both netscape and sun released the source code to their programs because the software was no longer of any value to them.  Sort of like donating to Goodwill.

Yes, but that doesn't change the fact that you'll work it all off.
