What I wanna know more of is this whole HURD kernel thing. Isn't this a new alternative to Linux and BSD that is still in development, meant to be the final OS piece of GNU?(the true piece, Linux was a placeholder)

Linux isn't a placeholder, it's a private project to learn x86 programming (learn your history).

HURD is due Real Soon Now - for the past 18 years or so   . It actually seems to work, go see GNU. And know how to build your own system.

HURD is indeed the 'true' GNU kernel, since it's developed by GNU itself. But that doesn't make Linux less true, it just makes it not GNU-made.

Trying out beta's isn't *that* dangerous. Besides, you'll do something back for the OSS community. Just don't use it for important work.

Ive been thinking about HURD lately. What is the point? There already are excellent GNU operating systems including gnu linux and gnu netbsd. I might be willing to try it, but why?

The way I understand it is they want it so they can say they have a GNU/GNU system, a system made up of *entirely* GPL code. Most Linux distros today are a little over 50% GPL. Even the Linux kernel allows proprietary modules and code. I believe HURD will prevent the inclusion of proprietary code but I'm not 100% on this.

Well im the type of person that hears about something that's in the same category as Linux IE:kicks wind0ze ass when it comes to the source code quality perspective. Then I start getting these thoughts: "WOW! It's new! I wonder if it goes faster then Linux?"

Uh don't hold your breath if you think Hurd will blow Linux out of the water any time within the next 20 years.

if they are still hung up on making it a microkernel (which is the reason it has taken so long to bring out, about 20 years and counting so far) then i doubt it will be as fast as linux. I understand the tradeoff between micro and macro (sorry, monolithic, that's correct terminology isn't it?) kernels, but microkernels will only be more efficient if the machine is performing a more limited set of processes as i understand it.
