Linux isn't a placeholder, it's a private project to learn x86 programming (learn your history).
HURD is due Real Soon Now - for the past 18 years or so
. It actually seems to work, go see GNU. And know how to build your own system.
HURD is indeed the 'true' GNU kernel, since it's developed by GNU itself. But that doesn't make Linux less true, it just makes it not GNU-made.
Trying out beta's isn't *that* dangerous. Besides, you'll do something back for the OSS community. Just don't use it for important work.
