finding hardware

How do i search for hardware in slackware? I didnt get it to check for my network card during the install but i know it found it on a previous install of slackware. How do i get it to look for the network card?

well... when i type "computer, read thoughts and setup network" it replies "I'm sorry, I can't read thoughts and setup network. I don't think that would be a good idea.
but that might be due to the script called 'computer,' that i wrote.

so what the hell? isnt there an answer to my question? I looked on the net (found an interesting project to make coffee powered by my computer) but nothing of interest. Slackware is more different from redhat than i thought.

I don't know, I just passed on what the Slackware page said.  Didn't "netconfig" help? What kind of network card do you have? Is it turned on in your kernel and do you have a kernel module for it?

no it kinda worked.
i got more problems too.
I ran netconfig and it found my network card. I set it up properly with the IP address being 192.168.0.4 and the gateway being 192.168.0.1 but it cant ping any other computers on my network for some reason.

I have two network cards in that computer but Linux woul only ever detect one of them. I switched the cable between the ethernet cards in case i had it hookedup to the wrong one but it still didnt work.

ifconfig doesnt show the subnet or IP of eth0 but it is in /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1

my other problem is on another computer and i cant get the mouse properly configured.
I ran xf86config and there didnt seem to be any setting to choose for a USB mouse. I cant figure out how to get my USB mouse to work.

I haven't used Slackware since version 1 and 2 so... But I can tell you that the trouble-shooting is the same as any other distro using "ifconfig", "netstat -rn", "route" etc...

i was using route to determine routes but i cant add any default route because i cant contact any other computer. route and netstat -rn show only the loopback interface becausei cant setup any other routes becasue i cant contact any of the other computers on my network.

i went to runlevel 1 and then back up to 3 and now it works.

Ah yes, I assumed you did that. The "netconfig" just creates the RC file but doesn't actually execute it. You could have manually executed it or executed it by changing run levels as you did.
