« on: 13 November 2002, 01:49 »
hey, I'm new to the site but i just wanted to start off by saying that the site kicks ass!
Bill Gates is a dick and his software sucks!
I'm so sick of Microsoft products that just crash continuously and waste my time, anywho I've been wanting to look into the whole linux thing for a while but it is hard to get information and/or find someone who can help me out, so that's why i'm here
If someone could help me out on the basics on how to get started using linux that would be great

thanks in advance,
Barry

Welcome to the Microsoft Eradication Society forums.

For general help with Linux, I suggest you go here.

And first off, we will have to know some things of you, before we can recommend a proper Linux distribution:

- How good are your computer skills?
- What is your current operating system?
- Have you ever got any experience with UNIX, GNU, BSD or Linux?

Again, welcome

Calum

Microsoft software sucks?

Like Microsoft flight simulator? SQL server? MS Word, Windows 2000 Advanced Server?

None of them outright suck, 95% of the time they all work for me. If I had paid for any of them I'd be pissed but I don't :)

I'd be just as pissed if I had paid $800 for any Adobe products like Photoshop or illustrator. I have just as many problems with them as anything from Microsoft. How about Macromedia products? I paid just under $4000 for Cold Fusion and I have problems with it.

All software has problems. The only reason linux/unix is cool is because for the most part it's free for home users and it's open source without much spyware.

Linux/Unix is certainly not all free if you want any kind of support or some software written for it.

Bill gates is one hell of a good business man. I certainly don't agree with his tactics but that fucker shure knows how to make money.

Anyways, computers are cool and learning is cool you can do both with any operating system out there.

hmmm It just weird how some people declare somebody as cool when they are pushed around by them. So in your case you think Bill is cool because he knows how to make money for himself and he knows how to screw the consumer. Ok.

Second. I refuse to pirate Software. I did it. I did it when i was using Windos. But now that am using Linux I refuse to pirate any WinDos ported app  or any MS product for that matter.

 A) I dont need to do it.
 B) MS views as paranoid to give some basic apps to the consumer for free. Every  fucking computer should come with a free workable compiler for example. The lack of basic fundementall programs promote piracy. For real who wants to spent $2000 dollars to obtain a complete package of applications (Office, AV,the OS it self And so on)?  And further more, piracy, like what you are doing now,  has started the whole fucking TCPA thing. Good job.

And no with Windos you cant learn shit compared with what you can learn with Linux. LINUX IS OPEN SOURCE!!!!!!!

I did not say bill was cool, I said the guy knows how to make money.

You think he's the only business man screwing you?
You think their are many businesses out there that are not trying to screw you? Bill just does it better than most.

Everyone is screwing everyone. If you had not noticed their are wars going on all over the world. Insurance companies are screwing you, hospitals are screwing you, mortgage companies, banks and credit cards are screwing you, your government is screwing you. Get used to it, Linux is not going to free the world of assholes. It's just a computer operating system and other than running somewhere between 60 and 80% of all web servers very few home users have much interest in it. You/we are the minority.

Again I'm not saying Linux Sucks. I think it's cool. I've been playing with it for a few years (without much luck) I also use MS products and so far I honestly can't tell you I've found a single app that works better on Linux. I'm sure I'm wrong but I have not experienced it yet.

You are right. There are many people out there screwing us over. There are only a couple that I can think of off the top of my head who aren't screwing us. Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman.

I also have a lot of experience with Windows NT and 2000 Advanced Server, SQL Server, IIS, Exchange, etc, etc, etc. To be honest I have better luck with Linux, Apache/PHP/Perl, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Sendmail/IMAP/POP/HORDE/IMP/ETC. The fact that the latter are free is just a bonus.
