« on: 22 February 2002, 07:41 »
Hey,

Check out this link
This palce has linux virus software believe it or not

I can't imagine why anyone would need this for linux. To my knowledge there have only ever been 3 linux virii. So are they just trying to make a $ from linux folks now too?  Maybe some of you can explain???

Virus software for linux ???????????

Most of the virus companies sell Virus software for Linux.  But not for the reasons you might think.  Think about Samba file servers.  Linux can scan the Samba shares for Windows viruses and clean them up.  Also for the FTP sites who must make sure they are providing virus free software.  And for the SMTP servers who wish to scan email attachments before they get to their Exchange Servers and Windows end users or for outgoing messages....

In addition to be able to scan and repair Windows files from Linux machines some put in checks for known Linux trojans etc... You're right, for a Linux desktop it's a waste of time (unless yer plannin' on running that Lindows crap).
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

Hey VoidMain,

Thanks for the response. I knew that did not seem right. A Yahoo group I am in is talking about virii on Linux and several people are very worried about it. Then someone posted that link. When I checked it out I thought WTF. However after your explaination it is perfectly reasonable of course many places are going to require virii software to protect the Fat drives. I can't imagine why I did not realize that one. Slaps self in head.

Thanks
