how do i install linux and keep my windows
« on: 22 October 2003, 21:10 »
I have a computer running Windows Me and want to install Redhat 7.2 in a dual boot.  I already set up a boot disk and everything and know how to get started, but how do I dual boot and partition my hd while still keeping the windows stuff separate?  Other people need to use this computer and I don't want to mess up anything in Windows.

u'll have to defrag(use the norton utilities defrager becuase the windows one sucks) ur drive and then use partition magic to partition ur drive.  this will save ur data from being deleted.

i know people who had success with this method, but i didn;t.  u could try anyways.  i backed up my data over a lan while i formatted and partitioned.

Best to back up critcal data before messing with partitions.

You can use partition magic, or you can use GNU Parted to shrink your partition.

i mean, i've been using this computer for a long time and can't afford to lose the information or screw it up.  'sides i don't have any way to back up my system anyhow.

hi there,

firstly if you have any valuable data you are mad not backing it up. you'll regret this when it all goes.

the easiest way to start using linux is to get a second hard disk and install it to that. use it, learn it, then after a month or so take emense pleasure in removing the windows partition

You don't have to take any risk.

*Make a backup and mail(or...) it to a friend.
*Use Partition Magic (free demo: http://www.tucows.com/preview/222189.html )
resize your c: drive (be sure you have enough free space to do this...and you allways have your backup  ;)
*install linux on the "free space"

Better yet, download Knoppix at www.knoppix.net. This will give you a full GUI-enabled Linux version that you don't need to install at all.

You just boot the PC with the CD and Knoppix will load into memory; to go back to winblows you just reboot your PC without the CD, that's it! This is a great distro for brand new candidates.

Play with it for a couple of weeks and you'll fall in love with it; then junk that fucking piece of shit OS. Are people still using winblows ME? Plain DOS is better.

Good luck!
