QUICK I NEED AN ANSWER!
« on: 28 August 2002, 07:44 »
Well you'll be glad to know that im not some fence sitter, my legs dangle over the Linux side, even if my ass is still on the fence. After spending two weeks with no Mandrake, I readied Libranet and took it for a spin(showing im not a quitter). Ok so after some shenagians(sp), I was ready to rock the house with Libranet. Uh oh, what file system do I want? EXT2, EXT3, or Reiser FS?

What are the pros and cons of each? I'd appriciate an answer ASAP so I can be installing Linux while im watching X-files.

Footnote:I removed Mandrake because I wanted to find a distro that had more "zoom" to it.

I've never used ReiserFS although there are claims that it's better than the other two. I am very happy with ext3 (which is ext2+journaling). Six of one, half dozen of the other...
Someone please remove this account. Thanks...

if your distro supports XFS go with it, or if it supports reiserfs, go with that. all ext3 is, is ext2 with journallying. witch it wasn't disegned to be journaled, and i think that reiserfs is faster then ext* and xfs is the fastes i have used, then agian, i have never put any filesystem through *extreme* use.

Lol, well too late, EXT3 it is. Explain what XFS and journaling is to my n00b ears.

Is there enough of a performance boost to warrant spending time re-installing Libranet?

ext3 will keep you happy, I've got Libranet installed on my box using ext3 fs and I've had absolutely no problems with it.  (Of course, it's Debian, so you wouldn't have any problems with it).  Dude, you're gonna LOVE adminmenu; it's the best thing about Libranet- I won't tell you anymore, just wait until you try ir!
I'm SERIOUS about Linux; are you??

ext3 pisses all my space away, like a good bit of it, reiserfs doesn't, infact i like reiserfs soo much that im usnig it complety with ChoasNETOS. and xfs, it was created by sgi to be the one of the fastest file systems *ever* made. reiserfs is a database file system if i am correct/*so much for microsofts claims of an advanced db filesystem*/ the reason it is not a widespread as others is that earlyer kernels and versions had a few problems, but now i use it with redhat to store mp3s.
