Upgrading kernel
« on: 9 December 2002, 00:35 »
I just wanted to thank Void Main again, this time for the tutorial on upgrading the linux kernel. It was specifically for Red Hat 8.0, but the only thing that had to be changed for use on my Mandrake setup was the line

# cp  /boot/config-2.4.18-14  .config

For Mandrake 9.0, its just

# cp  /boot/config-2.4.19-16mdk  .config

Other than this it was a great tutorial. Check it out.

Can I assume that was the stock Mandrake 9.0 kernel that you upgraded from? If so I'll add your note to the page.

Thanks!

Indeed it was the stock mandrake 9 kernel.

Void main I just wanted to add that Mandrake 9 performs a lot faster with this kernel than with the kernel mandrake provides, at least for me. I would suggest all mandrake users to upgrade.

Oh and I wanted to try out the 2.5 kernel too, would the install work in the same way?

I have tried on 2 or 3 occasions to get 2.5.47 and 2.5.50 compiled and working. I actually got it to compile once but I quickly reverted back for some reason and then just decided to wait for 2.6. I'm very pleased with 2.4.20 for now. Maybe you will have better luck than I. Oh, I know what the big things were. No nVidia or VMware support on the development kernels.

The stock nVidia and VMware source RPMs refused to compile against it. I'm sure if I were to go to the news servers I could find patches to make them work but it just wasn't worth the effort in my case. I figure it will be 5 or 6 months before 2.6 comes out and then probably another couple of months before there is good 3rd party support for it. Good luck!

Let me too take this opportunity to thank Void Main for the excellent tutorial on the fonts thing. Copying them from Windows was a cool idea..

Heck, pages look much better now.

thanks,

I just put up a couple more tips today (actually the last one just minutes ago). One covers setting up DHCP and Dynamic DNS servers under Linux on your home network:

http://voidmain.kicks-ass.net/redhat/redhat_8_dhcp_dynamic_dns.html

The other is configuring your fast desktop to be a terminal server for your slow laptop, turning your slow laptop into a speed demon:
