My first post from Linux.
« on: 21 May 2003, 13:57 »
I have tried to get my Lucent Winmodem to work in Linux several of times(each attempt was unsuccessful). Well, I bought an external modem today and it actually works in Linux.

Now I can actually use the internet in Linux I may enjoy the OS more. I will say that I think that the fonts in Windows XP look better and I still like Windows more than I do Linux...but now I can play with Linux when I'm bored. I know this is a pointless post...this is just a victory post. ;P

Anywho, I'm going to see what kind of useful things I can find on the net for Linux now.

BTW, the external modem seems to perform so much better in Windows(and it doesn't use CPU cycles) so even if I decide to ditch Linux I still came out with a better modem.

For people looking to buy a good Linux compatible dial-up modem look no further than the "Actiontec External 56k modem (EX560LKA)". It works without a hitch in Linux, Windows and BeOS.

First off,

All external modems work in Linux; we really don't need a recommendation.  A V.92 56k external is pretty much just that.  I'm surprised that ur Lucent modem didn't work in linux a lot of internal lucents were made to work with linux.

But, all in all, congrats.  What distro r u running?

I'm messing with Mandrake 9.1 right now. After I get used to the underpinnings of Linux(the command line part of Linux) I will try a harder to use distro.

Right now I'm fighting with getting MPlayer to work on this fool thing. LoL, I sound like a hobbyist because I'm just tinkering with stuff.

Don't let Mplayer get you down. It is notoriously a bitch to compile, well mencoder is worse...
Have you tried the RPM's - Hey build your own RPM for the practice  :D

Nice Zombie. To tell you the honest truth, I never expected that you'd actually install Linux but you proved me wrong.

I can't say anything more other than wish you to enjoy Linux.   ;)

Yup, I got ripped off too with a Winmodem. I got my Winmodem to work after a visit to linmodems.org. I was on the verge of buying an external when I managed to find the driver there.

Nice to hear ya trying Linux. I installed Redhat 9 a few days ago and it owns. I did *no* setup except for clicking Add Printer->712c    . Rpmfind.net will find ya all the new cool builds of linux software. Mandrake has urpmi though doesnt it? I'm not sure how that works tho

edit: oh and redhat's fonts are nah-nice

Gratz Zombie, I'm really glad to hear that your giving Linux a chance.  I hope that even if you don't ever come to like it better than windows, that you at least come to appreciate it for what it is.

Solo, how's Michigan these days?  Instead of going through rpmfind.net, there is a much better way to upgrade and install new packages on redhat.  You need one package called apt-get.  You can probably find an RPM for the latest verion of apt-get on rpmfind.  With apt-get you can, with one command, upgrade numerous packages at once with all dependancies covered.  You can also install new packages without worring about dependancies.  Apt-get is the first package every Red Hat user should install.  For details, go to Void Main's Place (make sure to get the Red Hat 9 version).

Depends on your distribution really and whether or not you have access to a Windows partition. For example, SuSE 8.2 which I'm using now, can download and install M$'s TT fonts through Yast Online Update automatically!   :D

If you're using RH, Void Main has also written a nice tutorial over at his page on how to get them and introduce them to xfs, so that they are available next time you start X. You can catch it here..
