In December 1996, Apple acquired NeXT Software Inc. and its Intel-compatible OpenStep operating system. Under the company's "Rhapsody" OS strategy, it planned to base the next-generation Mac OS on OpenStep, shipping an Intel version to provide a cross-platform development environment.

What do you want to know about it?

OpenStep is an operating system built on Uinux over the Mach kernel. It was an open source derivative of NextStep.

Apple bought OpenStep from Next, and used alot of it's technology to develop OS X.

What else do you want to know?

I thought NextStep was from Next; being that OpenStep is open-source, can you really buy it from somebody?

Update:

OPENSTEP was an OS that both updated NeXTSTEP and provided support for the OpenStep APIs.  If you're interested, you may wish to look into GNUStep, which is the GNU clone of OpenStep, I think?? *shrug*

it's useable, and interesting to play with.  however you gotta make sure it supports your hardware because its got a VERY limited set of drivers.
