Only because the FTP client is ripped off from BSD (you will find the Berkeley copyright notice in the executable).  And then they had to make it brain dead, it doesn't even return any useful exit codes if you script it!  I had to script it in Windows and the only way of determining the success of the FTP session was to redirect the output to a file and parse it for errors in your program. Duh!  At least in UNIX you can check wether an FTP session was successful by checking the exit code of your scripted FTP session.

But wait, this is in a MAC forum.  Never mind....M$ rant over.

I went to MWNY (as press, no less), and after playing with it for hours, I think Jaguar is worth it, and so is .Mac. My point(s):

1) The finder is MUCH faster. It's useable on a G3/300 now (I played with one of the Iomega guys laptops w/Jaguar on it). And don't tell me it was before. I have an older Wallstreet, and it wasn't!

2) iDisk is also much faster, as they claim. I can't give you an exact benchmark, but it is much faster.

3) Sherlock 3 is just plain sweet. It is better than any other piece of software that tries to do what it does. Especially the movies thing, as I go to movies a lot.

4) iCal is OK. It's nothing spectacular, but at least it's simple.

5) Apple system profiler!

I could go on all day. So it could be cheaper sure, and they could offer at least an e-mail only plan. It would be way better if you could pay for .Mac monthly, as most people are only pissed because of "sticker shock".

M$ will do the same thing with .Net. Offer it free at first, to get you hooked, and then start charging for it...

I'm glad I paid for Watson. I use it all the time.

I dunno. It seems to me that what Watson provides is a natural extension of a programm like Sherlock. They even describe their program as a companion of Sherlock, that is, to expand it's functionality.

It's a good question tho. I mean, to upgrade a product you must expand functionality, when the next logical steps are coverd by a 3rd party app. What is the right thing to do?

Should they have paid Watson? It's their system, and their fucntionality which Watson taps into. Perhaps such functionality was on the drawing board long before Watson.

It's a tough one any thoughts?
