How does the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 16MB fair?
« on: 11 November 2002, 10:51 »
I can get a good deal for a 600Mhz ibook with cdrom (the pervious low end model)and was wondering if it came with the ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 16MB.

I would probably be doing some light gaming, but definitely not much, some warcraft 3 or other blizzard games that work with both PC and MAC.

How well does the hardware run warcraft 3 or similar games?

Most Blizzard Games: Great
Warcraft III: OK, if not pretty damn good.

I kludged it into working on my PowerBook G3 (Wallstreet 233 MHz w/4 MB RagePro). It was slow, but ran nonetheless. So it should have no problems on a newer 'book.

I have the same model with the one you mention (2002 iBook with a G3@600 MHz) which comes with the ATI Rage Mobility Graphics card (16 MBs memory). I don't know much about gaming since I'm not a gamer myself but here are some info from the Apple System Profiler if that helps.

Anyway, it is a great laptop but if you buy it you should load it with lots of RAM as well.   ;)

I just got it today!!   :D

Really thrilled!

And only for $799, cause my school is selling off all the old stock that they have. Got lots of questions to ask too :

1)When I load a cd into the cd-drive, its really noisy when the disc is spinning. Is that normal?

2)And installing the airport card is not as easy as I though it will be  :(  how do we remove that cable that attached to the card??

3)How hard is it to reinstall a clean copy of OS X? I dun need OS 9 and some other software...and would like to dual boot with linux  :D

4)Where is a good place to get cheap ram?! I know that Crucial was having a coupon for $50 off the other time, but not any longer  :(  Anyone know any place where I can get 512MB of ram for the ibook?

Thank!

1) How loud? Is it a grinding noise?

2) Watch this little movie (Hint: Pause it, and press space to advance the frames while you are trying to do it)
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/html/ibook/ibookdusb-apc.cip.mov.html

3) Put the CD in.
Shut down.
Press the power button, then IMMEDIATELY press and hold "C" until  the installer comes up.
Might take a few tries.
Follow the instructions.

4) Crucial has some of the best prices on the planet. It will be hard to find better...

Enjoy your new Mac!

1) I dunno how to describe the sound from the cdrom, probably some kind of grinding like you mentioned, but its pretty loud. Is that normal?

Congratulations! I hope you enjoy your iBook as much as I do.   :D

As for your questions, Muffin Man answered them all. I don't know about the CD ROM noise issue but it doesn't sound good to me. Did you press the disc firmly into the CD drawer? If the disc just vibrates, then it is normal for all laptops so don't worry.

Again, enjoy your new Mac!   ;)

So I guess its normal then for the cdrom to be somewhat noisey due to it vibrating

BTW, I found 512MB of PC100 ram for $99. http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=3762&Item=OWC100SO512328L What do you guys thing?
