What should be in OS XI?
« on: 18 February 2003, 05:29 »
What do mac users think of new stuff in the next Mac OS?
These are some of my ideas:

-Custom interface, aqua looks cool, but it can get annoying
-X11 should ship with the OS preinstalled
-A single user mode, that assumes that you are the root and admin user so you don't have to always enter passwords
-More professional grade apps
-More system apps like terminal
-Runs '.exe' programs (i wish)

Aqua is OK, but I agree, it should be as customizeable out of the box as GNOME or KDE.

Yes indeed, that would be great.

That sounds like something LindowsOS or Microsoft would do.  Entering a password now and then is nothing compared to the security benefits gained by running as a limited user most of the time.

No, '.exe' programs are usually viruses and are altogether evil.

With OS X, the only thing proprietary is the interface (aqua). If they were to take bossesjoe's suggestion of customizable interfaces, then everything would be open source.

I agree with your first two ideas. Aqua can sometimes get annoying and I don't like to use any theme switchers. X11 should also be there by default, at least in an accompanying CD, like Developer's Tools in 10.2.

The idea about a single user's mode could pose a serious security risk and yes, it also reminds me of Lindows.   :D   I don't know exactly what you mean by "professional grade apps", but I think that OS X comes with all the apps a simple user might use.

The terminal in OS X is already there (Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal). I don't know if you meant something different. Oh, and about those *.exe apps, no thanks.

Well, that brings up some truths but to point out that the reason that most people don't use the mac is the lack of software. Although this is only partially true, if Mac OS XI had the capability of running '.exe ' programs it would attract more users. I am under the impression that '.exe' is the standard windows program, its called something like win32 in my c++ program. If I am wrong please correct me.

What I mean is stuff like Final Cut Pro or DVD studio, I am not saying that these should be incorperated into the Mac OS like preview or itunes but Apple should make more. Some people might say that this would discourage third-parties like Adobe to stop making apps for the mac. I think it would make them create a better application I the idea of making money. I would also like to see more stuff like how the control click on a program by Apple like itunes, brings up choices such as "play" or "pause" in third party apps. I know of none.

Sorry for puttting this in so many diffrent replies. Yes I know and love terminal. What I meant was applications that interface with the system more and also the unix base. Apple did a good job though with some of the apps in the devloper's cd.

Here is my opinion.

-X11 should ship with the OS preinstalled
Sounds good, but I go with the idea of make it simple and let the advanced people make it hard.

-A single user mode, that assumes that you are the root and admin user so you don't have to always enter passwords
Already there, hold Command-S when you boot
-More professional grade apps
Ummm.  Well I think this request should be on the "Linux" side of things.  Apple has the support of all the big App makers, Adobe, MS, Macromedia, etc.
-More system apps like terminal
I don't understand this one, there are a lot of apps for system stuff other than the terminal, Directory Access, Process Viewer, CPU Monitor, ODBC Manager, NetInfo, and Network Utility
-Runs '.exe' programs (i wish)
Umm no, these are called viruses, and would most likely violate US copywrite laws.

I would like to have a package or something that installs all libraries that are on most Linux systems, OSX doesn't even come with Glib, and that stops most linux apps from compiling.

better intagrate classic into the system.
turn quartz into a networked protocal simaler to X11.
on that matter, opensource the quartz api
ship with some version of the *BSD's ports system if they don't already. and make an easy to use graphical interface for it.
add support for quad processors.
add support for .net. i know that sounds hypocritical, but it is going to become wide spread becuase of a certain company in redmond that has too much money and influence for our good. so why not use an opensource implementation like mono, before microsoft builds a crippled implementation for the mac.

I still don't understand why anyone would want to run *.exe programs on their Mac.  I can see doing this with Linux, but think about it, the only Windows programs that haven't been ported to Mac OS are basically viruses, spyware and shareware programs.  And a few g@m3s.
